110 was designed round a pig. That 90 is ideal for feeding round, carrying the mutt etc. perfect as a picker-up vehicle, or for foxing. If it has to be green, get it sprayed, wrapped or just do it with a tin of olive drab. The tax exempt thing is a bonus at best.It's for dogs ,I wouldn't try to lift a pig or a sheep into a defender.

Comparable (ish) engine swap does not loose the historic status.

This is correct, you can put a 200tdi in a Series and keep historic status.
The engine means very little, if I remember correctly it's only worth one point, and so long as you have not hacked the chassis about to make it fit there will be no issues
