There is a post on FB just now, I "think" it's an RR Sport.

"3 1/2 years old, 54,000 Miles and it needs a new engine ! Word for word Land Rover UK told me today "Mr Reid you've had your fair usage out of the engine !!!

Absolute shambles LR you should be disgusted in yourselves !!!"

Anyone??

Seems the way of the world these days - "We've had your money :D..... so do one :p- your sincerely <big company>"

Certainly gonna keep us away from new cars

Taken at face value thats really rubbish service from LR

We dont know the whole story though - has he, for example, kept the same oil in there for the last 54000 miles?

I'm still looking for replies to that. I wouldn't imagine so, but when I find out more I'll get back...

This:

So with great regret I'm writing to you now via social media due to the fact Land Rover customer services seem to have lost all respect for customers. I currently own a 63 plate new shape Range Rover sport 3.0 SDV6 (which may I add is about the 10th Land Rover Iv personally owned and 1 of 3 I currently own) .

My vehicle is in marshalls LR after the engine seizing after 54,000 miles ! Yes that's 54,000 and the car is now requiring a new engine. So after taking the car into my local dealer and waiting to hear back on what's happened in look up to see if this has been heard of before, low and behold the first thread I come to is on L494 3.0SDV6 crankshaft bearing failure. So reading further in it appears at this point the crankshaft bearings in the early models don't have locating tabs on them causing them to spin and end in failure. So I go back to the dealer who then confirms this is not unheard of ! My case is then put forward to Land Rover to see if they will cover it.

At this point I'm advised a new engine is around £12,000. A week later after numerous phone calls to and from the dealer I get offered 80% good will form LR and the cost is not £12,000 it's nearly £15,000. This would leave me to pay £3000 toward fixing a problem that is quite clearly a design fault from factory. Due to this Im not happy to pay anything towards the repair as the fault is far from no fault of my own, and when spending £50,000 on purchasing the car 4 months prior to this I certainly didn't expect this to happen.

So back on the phone to customer services to speak to a manager about my complaint, 3 days 9 attempts later I speak to some of who makes it clear that it's no negotiable and if I don't want the contribution I can leave it and go without. At this point I explain again the car should not require a new engine at 54000 miles as to which I get this reply , (May I add at this point, I have this on a recorded telephone call to customer service) "well mr reid you have had your fair usage out of the car covering 54,000 miles"!!! I'm utterly disgusted at this point that I have just been told I have had fair usuage out of an £80,000 3 1/2 year old product ! The phone call came to an end at this point with much infuriation.

At this point now I'm left without a vehicle, without transport for my family and a fault that's going to cost me £3000 because Land Rover can't have the decency to own upto a design fault !

So to conclude my point. Land Rover I'm utterly disgusted with how you have dealt with the situation, and I as a very loyal customer shall not be purchasing another Land Rover product again !

Many Thanks

Why does this remind me of a guy who had an engine fail about 6 months ago who had never changed the oil...????

Still does not say if it had been serviced to their std procedures?

Did he buy it from a LR dealer? did he get a warranty?

So many open questions.

Cheers

Should have had a P38 ...

I PM'd him and may or may not get a reply. If I do, I will ask him. However, I rather think he seems to be the type of person who would do the right thing. If someone doesn't change oil, they deserve all they get. But this guy seems pretty switched on by all accounts, which is why I put my mitt in and see if I can help, even in some minor fashion. It is pretty shite that an engine can fail so catastrophically after such a low mileage. And note that LR don't seem to have suggested poor maintenance or overheating, just simply "You've had fair useage!" Really? So now LR are throw away commodities after three & a half years??

Is this the same issue as with D3 tdv6 with short bearing caps allowing bearings to rotate and block oilways?

I went on their Face Book page and put this:

I have a question for the directors of LR. Are "all" Range Rovers considered to be a luxury brand? And if so, should they be considered reliable if regularly serviced or should they be considered a throw away commodity, like say a refrigerator? The reason I ask is because I currently own a 17 year old P38 in remarkable condition. 91k miles and everything still working. But a friend has a 3.5 year old car, fully serviced and in better than average condition, but the engine failed due to a design flaw. The car has 54k miles. He is being told you will not replace it FOC, but want him to pay a portion of the replacement. I could understand if he was some blithering idiot who treated the car like dirt, but he isn't and he hasn't. I recently sold my Mercedes E320 with 197,000 miles on the clock and in perfect running order. The emissions allowed for 3.50 on the gas blast. My car passed with 0.22. I find "that" pretty damn amazing on a 15 year old car, but then it too was regularly serviced. The current owner is returning an amazing mpg and loves the car. Clearly NOT past it's fair service life. So how can you take such a stance on someone who has been a loyal customer? He has had over 10 LR vehicles and never had a problem such as this. I want to know WHY you think this is in ANY way or fashion FAIR to treat a loyal customer with such disdain and disrespect, especially after so many years buying only Land Rover vehicles. Perhaps you should consider replacing the engine free of charge? It's not like you don't a have any lying around is it? Thank you for taking the time to read this. I hope you will reconsider. After all, your brand is enjoyed world wide so a little R&R would do this customer the world of good and keep his RR on the road and a smile on his face.

Can't wait for the reply ;)

Don't LR learn from their own experience that relying on pressing bearings / liners into into blocks without additional fail safe's is going to end in tears! Would have thought this one should have been properly serviced for at least the 1st 3 years for warranty & only a few months out of warranty?

I could go on at length about my dealings with LR customer service, albeit in 1997. It seems nothing has changed.
I was told ' I have spoken to our V8 specialists and they say it is quite normal for a RR to use a pint of oil every 500 miles' and then to have the phone put down on me! That was a huge mistake on their part as there is nothing so dangerous as a women who is riled. The RR was just 10 days old when the engine warning light came on. In the end, and after a bitter and threatening battle, they did get my dealer to take the car in and to change 'the top part of the engine'. Hey presto! It stopped using oil.
This had all started at the beginning of June and was over by the December. For Christmas, I gave my dealership a lovely Iced Christmas cake which featured a snowy wilderness and a Dinky car - had to be a non RR because they didn't make them but I painted it in the colour of mine - followed by an oil tanker and signed it ''From a Well-oiled customer''. When I returned to collect my car at the end of the service period, I was told by the workshop that they had not been allowed to cut into the cake because the Manager wanted to bring in his camera (before the days of phone cameras) and send the photo to get it published in the LR dealership magazine. I do not know if this did happen but my RR never missed a beat for the 3 future years of ownership.

This is why if youv got a 300tdi or older spec landy hang onto it cus in a few years its all landy enthusiast are going to want and prices will go up!
And further reinforces my decision to sell the Range Rover and get a 300Tdi 110 instead!!

I find most big companies are now the same, our local Vet breached its own and the RCVS guidelines and I proved it Vet got a warning did I get any of the £300 over charge No.
For what it would have cost LR why didn't the just swap it?
After all you want a customer for life not an unhappy one telling people how poor they are.
Looks like the 300 Disco is staying a bit longer

Not surprising given the history of the Rover V8.

If it is a modern LR it won't be fitted with an RV8 o_O My previous 3.5efi had 160k on the clock when I sold it & still had close to factory spec. compressions & used minimal amounts of engine oil.
