Hi Guys,

Right so this is my second post.

I'm trying to get the lights on my landrover working and unfortunately it seems that, when I switch it to sidelight, they both work.
Wen I switch it to beam, only the left beam and the left sidelight are on. The other two are just slightly glowing red(photos) could anyone give me some advice? :p

I rebuild the front part of the loom myself so know that all the wires are in the right place as i tested the connections. Thanks!

Tom.

Ok great. I checked them before that reply and got the other headlamp to work. However, it seems to be brighter than the other headlamp? Just checked the main/dip/earth behind the headlamp and they are all correct...

Is one a sealed beam and the other a halogen perhaps? Mine was when I bought it and the sealed beam was not at bright.

i thought I had already replied but it must've deleted itself,

I bought two new headlights from paddocks so I know they aren't the issue, I've managed to get the two front headlights to work on dipped but only the right seems to go to full beam, I've also managed to get the sidelights working with them.

Now I have an issue with the indicators, I've checked all earths and they are good, I then tried to short it out on the ticker box and it managed to create a spark... So I'm not sure why it's not working?

As above. You've got a short somewhere in the circuit. Stating the obvious really but if it sparked it's a bad one. Careful you don't have a wiring meltdown or worse a fire. .

I had the issue with my headlights same as you when I reconnected the wiring after I re rebuilt the front end, turned out to be the earth

I was just testing that there was actually current running to it and there was so its all good. Plus, it wasn't working before so I wasn't going to ruin anything! But I have to figure out why it's not "clicking" hmm. It worked on one of the lights before... But not now.....

Yeah I've redone all that.. And everything is earthed on bolts and I checked them so they are good :/ but surely the "clicker" would still "click"? (I don't know the name of it)

My new indicator switcher on and offerer (thats what its called) has no noise at all. Dunt click or owt but works fine.
Nothing worked on mine when I got it but by going through everything bit by bit I managed to trace two faults, both spade connectors. An uge one on the back of the Keyey turney ony thingy (possibly the ignition switch) and one in the glassy tube flashy bangy box under the steering turney roundy thing. Both am just dirty and loose.

IME, Faults of this nature are almost always earth related. add an extra earth using a wander lead with crocodile clips direct from the battery to a clean area near the lights - move it around till the problems go away. Check the earth straps from the engine too - you'll be surprised how fussy even 12V can be about a return path. plenty of vaseline on cleaned terminals will prevent the regrowth of verdigris.

and your indicator switcher onner and offerer, to quote Bobsticle, is called a flasher unit:)

When you say it doesn't click do you mean the switch? If so that's indicative of the short melting the connection inside. I've had that happen and had to replace the switch. It should click in both positions. They cost diddly from Craddock or Paddock. About £2.50.

Earth fault or switch. Switch the dip and main wires round to check switch.
I wouldn't earth through bolts, there's too much corrosion for it to be reliable. As test, run a long wire from -ve and poke it on various earth connector to see if if it improves.
Finally, if they're halogen, I'd put a couple of relays in to take the load off the wiring.

Thanks bobsticle and disco, I will give that a go today!
John S, the flasher unit doesn't click, and I know that it used to... The only reason it shorted was because I actually touched the wires together as I'd been working on the indicators for an hour and wanted to see if they had current to them.
SpringDon, I'm going rocha he the wires around today to seeing it makes a difference!
