Don't look like it is 4 wheel drive (new gaylander) let alone go across the woods towing a trailer.

Reminds me a bit of a newer fourtrax. Not a good step for land rover.

That's a better looking design but it dosen't take any values or inspiration from Defender as we know it, as is mentioned above it's like a combo between Freelander 2 and Disco 4. I imagine it will look more like a futuristic version of current Defender.
 
I reckon you can say Ta Ta to any sort of utility vehicle from Land Rover, they are only interested in image motors for chavs.

I wonder where the Army will go for vehicles?

They lost the utility section of the market to the Japanese years ago. Without the "Chav motors" Land Rover would have ceased to exist.

This is not to knock Defenders in anyway (I have a lot of respect for them), but let's get real for a moment. Land Rover can not make any kind of living out of people endlessly rebuilding their Series Land Rovers and need to sell something that's relevant to modern buyers with money to spend. I sometimes think that the only reason for having a Defender in a modern Land Rover showroom is because the typical buyer of a new RR or Disco would feel short changed if there wasn't one in the showroom!

The question is, do they go for the completely practical route and chase the numerous Asian manufacturers down the lowest price route, or use their image and prestige to sell a dream to country wannabes?

As far as vehicles for the army are concerned, I'd suggest that the Defender would be sold to them in ever decreasing numbers anyway and always at a price that will inevitably lose money! Have you ever tried bidding for government contracts?!

Landrover Owners International had some drawings a couple of months back, I'll take some pics and upload them over the weekend ... that looked like a cross between a Defender and a Hummer i.e. good ground clearnace but a shorter (as in height) body.

An interesting point for sure... I can see JLR selling the rights to the Defender to an independant company who will produce them in limited numbers for army/tractor use. I'm sure there's a caveat somewhere which allows vehicles to bypass EU safety requirements if they're sold in small enough numbers... its how TVR got away with having no airbags or ABS.

I struggle to see where the new Defender will fit into the model range though, as the Gaylander2 and Discovery 4 surely have the SUV market covered.

Unless the new Defender is made with a van engine and shonky plastics, it just won't be able to cut it as a 'trattor for the city'.
