My local LR specialist regularly rebuild these ABS modulators so it certainly can be done.

They recommend making the ABS trigger every few weeks as apparently it rarely does in normal Defender TD5 driving.

Brake hard on gravel, grass etc. Stops the shuttle valve seizing up they said.
 
Just thought I would let you all know how I've fixed this problem incase anyone has this difficulty in the future.

I purchased a ABS unit off Ebay. This had come off a 2000 Discovery 2. It looked identical and cost a fraction of the price of a new Defender one except there was one huge difference.. The ports were the brake lines run were in a different order.

My defender one: FL FR RL RR

Purchased Discovery: FL RR FR RL

Obviously this wouldn't work and would end up in a disaster if you had to use ABS or TC as the wrong wheels would lock up when the ECU wanted to brake a wheel in particular but sent the pressure off to a different wheel altogethor.

I took the punt and fitted it. When it was on I could possibly change the plumbing so that the correct lines went to the correct port on the modulator and all would be well. Turns out that it wasn't neccesary as the modulator still works the correct wheels when requested. Happy days.

Since I had my old Defender modulator now on the bench I though I would try to figure out what was wrong. I removed the black plastic cover to reveal the motor. Two allan bolts held the motor in place so I removed them and took the motor off. At the end of the driveshaft which pumps the two pistons there is a small ball bearing. This had completely crumbled with balls everywere. This is my problem and hopefully someone on here might be able to tell me were to find a new bearing for it?

I just encountered the same problem for my ABS modulator and had a look on ECU testing for a new SRB 50004105.

They didnt have any in stock and said it had to be that exact one for that defender. you seem to be happy with your alternative, just wondering if you know how to identify if another wabco modulator would work or not?

As an example they have SRB50004106 in stock and it looks exactly the same just wondering what the difference is and could it be fitted?
 
Take a look at ecutesting.com . I found their website when I had an ABS problem (turned out to be a wheel sensor). They overhaul Wabco ABS units. They were mentioned in the Daily Telegraph motoring problem sction yesterday.
and they are a bunch of scam artist's research a bit more. We ended up reporting them to trading standards, and only after threatening with court action did they finally refund us. ABS pump returned to us 3 times as repaired, the last time it was someone else unit, as we had marked ours with a UV pen inside cos we did not trust them, they are well know for being cowboys you have been warned! We all know how not to trust the reviews as half or fake, so i find it better to read the negatives, gives me a better idea of who you are dealing with

Hey just an update,

I ended up taking a risk and going with ECUtesting and it paid off. They built a modulator exact for my specs/SN and got it delivered to spain in 4 days for €600 still have the old one with me which Ill send back for credit. Turns out the modulator was the common problem of a leaky motor.

Sorry you had a bad experience but they were very accomodating to me and customer service was good.
 
lt's not unusual when you send a part off for reconditioning, to receive a different one in return.

I've had it happen more than once. lt's not a problem so long as it's the same part, and it works. Unless you particularly want your own unit back, say it's a Classic Vehicle and you are trying to maintain complete originality.

ln that case you'd have to specify that before you sent it off, to make sure they can comply.
