Hi. Went and bought a 90 last night. Checked it all out had a drive, all seemed good. About five miles down the road I could smell diesel, then it started banging and I pulled over and the engine cut out smoke was coming out of the engine vents, opened the bonnet and there were flames at the bottom of the back of the engine that went out fairly quickly but I was in a raging blizzard in the Yorkshire hills!
I am assuming the engine is frazzled I would just like an idea of what to look at when I venture outside to look after a stiff drink. I am not that familiar with the J19 engine, this one has done 200000 miles but did seem very good when I test drove.
I was so pleased with myself getting back into have a proper Land Rover again after a year with a freelander!
 
Ok. When I bought it it was down to its last drops of fuel and was running fine until I filled up with fuel. Probably just a coincidence but made me run for the receipt to make sure I had put diesel in.
 
Hopefully nothing too serious. It's just its way of saying welcome back to the world of tratters
 
Have you found where the leak is yet?
At 200k the engine is almost run in, and should be good for at least another 200k.
However, on mine the fuel line, filters and stuff are on the drivers side whilst the exhaust is on the other side of the engine, so I can't think of any way that the two could ever meet!
Please keep us informed regarding any developments.
 
I could be wrong here but reckon any court in the land would laugh at you when you told them its was 25 yrs old and had done 20k, in anyone elses book that means its only fit for one thing!

Edit meant 200k!

Sold as seen !!! any paper work to prove otherwise ? ;) if not forget it...
 
It was sold in good faith to me and the seller is willing to help out with costs incurred anyway. No need to fire things at the seller yet. He is a fellow enthusiast.
I can't see any obvious problems with the fuel lines or the return pipe
All seem good. I shall investigate further in daylight again.
 
Why do some people want to go the Trading Standards route if the seller is being reasonable?
Some sellers really don't know the mechanics of a Landy and sell in good faith ... I know, I've had a couple!
Life is NOT about who can claim for what, it's about people being people and not getting into legal stuff where the onl;y winners are the rip-off lawyers!!
 
Try a gravity feed with a small amount of fuel and disconnect the glow plug source. should still turn over with the crank then observe for the leaks. Before this check your oil not contaminated by fuel first then work on the return fuel line for leaks.
 
No obvious leaks. Have sent it off to an independent Land Rover garage locally to have it checked out. i think from having a look today and seeing the amount of oil blown out that there is a problem with the cylinder head, head gasket and possibly a cracked piston. I await the result from the garage tomorrow.
