you cant be sure its not stuck in diff lock till you try front wheel ,the linkage to transfer boox for difflock seizes /breaks
 
After making sure that everything else is OK and not dragging, have someone check the governor settings.

Mine is set to give me around 70mph at 25mpg!

jack it up if it turns its not in diff lock if it doesnt it is stuck in diff lock ,just because lever is not in diff lock doesnt necessarily mean transfer box isnt ,linkage could be broken ,badly adjusted
 
even though the old engine was knackered, i still remember it having the same problem. Its ussaly my dad that messes with that. I remember i played with it when we got it back because it wouldnt start. But we got that fixed
 
Hey sorry if i sound stupid, but can you explain to me why you shouldnt select normal? and what the difference is betwen normal and high range?
