recently made the change from a 97 300 tdi disco1 to an 02 td5, had the new one about a month and have just towed our caravan for the first time and it really struggled on hills, even hills that the our old 300tdi would do with ease, caravan weighs about 900kg and is same caravan as the 300 towed, also it struggles alittle on steep hills with no caravan on, td5 has 132,000 on it, full service history to this time last year, its a 5 seater manual GS, not sure if egr is blanked or not, running 18" alloys with 255 60 road tires, done a little bit searching n seen people mention a stuck waste gate, could this be the problem n if so is it fixable or do I need a new turbo,
Thanks

Wastegate actuator shaft seizing is a fairly common complaint and if stuck open wouldn't help on performance, but if stuck closed it won't affect the car until you really give it too much welly one day and do some damage.

Have a look and see if you can move it manually, it should be shut with the engine stopped.

There's also a boost control solenoid lurking under there which should be the wastegate control.

Hi peter, just checked the wastegate shaft, I know it should be fairly stiff, i used some mole grips n pushed towards the windscreen, it required alot more force than i thought but did move, now moves with alot less force needed but is still stiff I.E not wobbly
Any other ideas if this doesn't fix it, am not very mechanically minded but will give things a try!!!
Thanks

Oil on the ECU plug is a well-known fault, dealer could claim it happened after the sale.

Google "TD5 ECU Plug Oil".

Try a graphited penetrating oil on the wastegate shaft.

After more reading up on the oil in red plug im not too worried now!! Read a few horror stories online of people needing new ecu's with huge costs involved!! Cleaned it up for now and have ordered new injector loom to fit at the weekend,
Thanks guys
