Hi all, what is the best option ? It's a 2002 92,000 miler . Realise the gear boxes arnt the strongest . Don't have complete history on car . Should I get gearbox filter and fluids flushed first?just trying to be a practical woman! Cheers in advance .
 
Re-map but if you increase the torque it will kill the gearbox. There is another thread on this. The easiest and cheapest way to get more economy is to learn to drive economically. My mate gets 28mpg around and about and up to 34mpg on a run out of hiss L322 TD6, mind you he drives like a Nun.
 
Thanks datatek, suppose being a woman I could do the drive like a nun routine! If I just remap for economy would that still put too much stress on the gearbox? Did all the 2002 td6 's come with the gm gearbox? When I bought the car in June it showed 18.7 on the trip, just got it up to 22mpg overall.cheers saswitch
 
getting if remapped shouldnt damage the gearbox if your not full throttling it everywhere!!!

You don't need full throttle to max out the torque and the gearbox is already handling more torque than it's rated for:eek:
 
Ok, looks like adapting driving style a bit and looking round at re mapping options without increasing the torque. There seems to be divided opinion on the threads about flushing the gearbox and replacing the fluid . Or treating it as a sealed unit . Gearbox seems smooth at mo but don't want to be complacent about it .. Thanks

Look at the service schedule in RAVE, for the P38 it calls for autobox oil changes every 30K miles I reckon that the GM box needs at least that to survive.
 
I am also looking at the re-map for my range rover l322.

but seem put off by the weak gearbox.

but my old l322 is on 137,000 on its original gearbox (i think)

so dont really want to fuc.k it up any earlier than need be :(
 
Rave it is then! Haven't mastered that yet . But think it's a must. Had forgotten how much of an all round hobby rangies are.
 
Nudges a very old thread and tries to awaken it .................... Just wondering if you did the remap or if you took the flush and filter route? I recently had to put a new fuel pump in and have found a loss of approx 10% mpg since the change. I know it's not the driving style as that hasn't changed, so looking to see how to get my 10% back.
 
Thanks for the reply Hippo. Is that on the one you were asking about previously? Is all ok with the gearbox since the change?

Yes mate, purchased a chip from eBay, engine runs much better, quicker pickup, better MPG and gearbox changes a lot smoother now.
And the gearbox oil change has only made it feel even better.

I plan to flush the gearbox every year from now on.

I don't frash the car, it's just nice to have the extra power for overtaking etc...

Hi, re resurrection of an old thread. I went for a mega flush on the gearbox with new fluid and filter. Then took Datatek's sound advice about driving like a nun! ( had mega flush done in Cambridge by an independent) The gearbox service really improved the smoothness of the gearchange. I get about 24 mpg on average .

It seems the thing to do. I have good driving habits, although I say so myself :D that hasn't changed,the only difference is the replaced fuel pump. The moment it was changed the mpg dropped by approx 10%. I'm not bothered about torque/pulling power as it does great already and I horses. I have to pull the box up a nice steep hill on the farm and have no issues but a 10% mpg loss is a lot over a full tank. I need to get a flush done and see what happens and if no joy then chip it will be.

I would still get one lol
It will pull those horses 100 times better.
I also pull two 17h horses and the chip makes all the difference when towing
