Been having a start issue with my 06 L322 TD6 - started fine until recently, then one day refused to start - no warning lights/error messages, just no cranking or any other noises.

Tried a few things, starting in P/N to check if gear shift lockout worked (shows correct gear on dash) took ignition switch itself out to check and replaced with another used item (no difference). Battery is good (near new), tried jumping it from another car also but no go.

Tried the next day and it fired up immediately, started/stopped several times. Went to it the day after, no start.
Same again today, no start. All fuses are good, starter motor wire is secure.

Only work done prior to this was removing the intake manifold to clean out all the EGR crap inside, and the car started fine after doing that.

I’m wondering if the starter motor solenoid has gone.

Any ideas?

Ignition switches are a known failure item.

Already been replaced. Car started with both old and new ones when I had the ignition apart to replace it. That particular merry go round went like this:
No start, suspect ignition switch. Remove old ignition switch, strip switch and find contacts look a bit ropey. Order new switch.
Few days later, go to fit new (secondhand) switch, checked old switch just to see - car started on both old and new switches. Left replacement switch fitted.
Next day - no start. Swear lots.

Next time tap the starter with a hammer and see if it responds?
Editeddddd....

And we have a winner. Wife came home so got the small ****ting stick out, couple of knocks whilst she held the key over and off it went.

Are the starter motors/solenoids a serviceable item?

Have a look at the engine earth strap next to the passenger side engine mount they are known to go bad they look ok but corrode up inside the sleeve

Under the drivers front wing inside the plastic arch liner there is an earth post that gets pretty burnt;)

Tried jumping the earth wires including straight from terminal posts to battery, starter motor casing to battery, etc - used about 3 different pairs of jump leads and the engine bay looked like an accident in a spaghetti factory. Made no difference whatsoever, starter motor is now just buzz and click even when tapping it so I reckon it’s shot. Will hopefully extract it tomorrow for a strip down and see if the solenoid can be replaced or whether I’m going to be in for a whole new starter motor.

Better to go for an exchange recon starter motor IMO as the motor brushes will also be worn so just doing the solenoid may only be a short term fix.
