Hi,
The Harmonic Pulley has given up and I need to change it. Best method for holding it so I can undo the nut. I suspect there might be a crankshaft locking tool out there and ive seen a tool that bolts to the pulley. Any suggestions on which is easiest.

The nut? I don't know your engine, but RAVE shows the pully mounted with 4 small TORX bolts.
 
Sounds like it's similar to the P38, center boss is held by the big bolt and the pulley is bolted to the boss with smaller bolts.
 
Ok. ive not got to the big nut yet. I guessed thats what i might find when I get there. any words of wisdom on the way to remove this ?. do I need to lck the crankshaft.

From what @Datatek found in the workshop manual you shouldn't need to undo the big bolt,the pulley is held on by four smaller bolts.

Thanks for this. Much appreciated. Was going to pull radiator but I wonder if one can remove belt and then we’ll simply remove the pulley. Looks a little tight but I’ll see how I get on. thanks

managed to get a 32mm spanner on the fan and another 33mm spanner on the other nut. spun the fan off. pulled the fan and cowl out. strap round pulley and around subframe and 4 hex bolts out. she is off. completely shot. Trying to track another one down. bit easier than I thought it might turn out to be.

Bmw e39 530d or bmw 330d or e53 3.0d 184bhp models (pre 2003) are the same as the td6 harmonic balancer i have a spare sat off an e39 530d

A m57n 204bhp model is different they run a 6pk alternator belt and the m57 184bhp like ours are 5pk,
