Hello, so my Range Rover L322 td6 2004 will not go into 4th Gear it does some pretty specific things that might help narrow down the cause and they are as follows. take it for a drive it goes into first then second then third as normal and then as soon as 4th Gear should be engaged the trans failsafe prog appears the strange thing is that it loses the torque converter lock-up when failsafe happens it then free wheels when you leave off the Throttle, maybe that's a clue also if I drive it in manual mode and shift first second third torque converter lock up stays engaged. my hope is that maybe it is just a fourth to fifth shift solenoid that's causing the problem but I'm not sure because I am very unfamiliar with this particular gearbox. Bemble do these symptoms sound familiar to you? Any suggestions? it has very recently had an oil change new filter and oil level is perfect battery perfect too.

I don't know, but the torque convertor slipping clutch breaks up and fecks the gearbox.

Have you lost 4th AND 5th gears? It's highly significant if your transmission can't select 5th either (using manual mode). The torque converter lock-up clutch is automatically disengaged if failsafe mode is flagged.

Hi Bemble, yes it will not engage 4th or 5th under any conditions, i think it temporarily went into 4th for like 3 seconds and then to failsafe on couple of occasions but not entirely sure. What is the significance of not engaging 4 th or 5th?

yep i guess that's it so, gearbox F***ed again! I'm going to do a manual conversion using a 6 speed from an x5. at least it will be reliable! this RR had 2 boxes already 3rd will be a manual.
thanks for the info Phil

The bolt pattern for the E53’s NV125 transfer box is not the same as the NV225 (which was unique to the L322). I think, along with the electrical/electronic/control issues mentioned by holidaychicken, such a conversion would be extremely challenging.

Phil I've done loads of manual conversions it shouldn't be any more difficult than anything i've done before in my opinion! I will make adapter plate to join the GS6X53 box to the nv225 no big deal, and don't believe the engine needs to talk to the auto to idle and go through the the rpm range normally, i've put m57 into a classic before without to much issue. What electrical/electronic/control issues do you foresee? personally i think the pedal box will be trickier but all very doable. although i do think it would be too difficult to attempt for most people who aren't experienced with this kind of stuff.

If you’re capable of undertaking a manual gearbox conversion then you’re more than capable of re-manufacturing a 5L40-E transmission. Why don’t you rebuild your transmission yourself to ensure that, this time, it’s done properly? If you get the valve body assembly fitted with Sonnax valves this time, then the transmission should last another 80,000-100,000 miles.

I have actually considered doing that but when I looked into it I found that you need a specialist tooling and such, and I've not been able to find any kind of rebuild manual For it, do you know of any kind of rebuild guide manual? I rebuilt a torqueflite 727 Before and that was pretty easy but I had an excellent DIY rebuild manual to guide me along. but yeah I would definitely consider rebuilding it if i had the right information to guide me?
