Hi everyone, first post here as I’m at abit of a loss on what route to go with a gearbox problem on my td6..

Apologies if it has already been covered but I have tried looking..

All started last week when I started it and the battery light was on, being that I was less then 3 mins away from home I drove it home and by the time I got there I had ABS faults on dash and transmission in fail safe mode which I was semi expecting being the alternator wasn’t doing anything and it being dark so I had headlights on etc. BUT as I pulled up onto the drive, the alternator must of jumped into life and the abs lights went out along with the battery light but the trans fail safe mode stayed.

So I turned the car off and restarted, everything all good but still in trans fail safe and (at a guess they have a limp mode) the transmission was in limp mode. Turned it off and restated it and tried again, trans fail safe now gone and car driving as normal and like nothing happened,

The next day I jumped in the car to drive it and when I pulled away I now have no drive, put it into reverse and all okay and car moves, go back to drive and nothing, doesn’t even feel like it’s trying.. tried manual gear selection and still no drive. Took the battery off and charged it and left everything to power down with no battery connected for 24 hours and it’s still all the same and no drive but will go into reverse and move in reverse.

Plugged in and checked codes - none relevant only one for low battery voltage as expected. Checked data logger and PCM is showing 14.4v but the transmission control module is only showing 10.2v when running and seems only 1 of the 3 solenoids in the gearbox are working? so I’m assuming that’s possible where my fault is, but I have also noticed the sump on the transmission is seeping oil and now not 100% sure whether it’s just cause the oil is poss too low or whether alternator is messing about and poss causing the transmission to not get enough power?!

I’m now debating whether I should be pulling the sump off and checking wiring etc on the TCM (I’ve checked the plug going into the g/box and all looks okay) or whether I should just change oils and see what happens? Or if I need to order an alternator but don’t really want to put one on it if the gearbox is dead. Or if someone if clued up enough and advises me the gearbox is dead and it needs replacing then there will be a cheap l322 td6 available at the weekend 😂.

Thanks for any advise and sorry it’s a long one. Hopefully I haven’t blown my gearbox up!

Sounds like you may have an issue with either your Forward Clutch, or the Forward Clutch sprag. Even if there was a solenoid problem, or - for that matter- even if you lost all electrical power to the transmission, it should still drive forward in its default gear (4th) as it has a Manual Valve directly connected to the shift lever cable.

The 10v at the tyranny control is worrying!
If your pulling the sump on the box, check for metal dust in the oil pan.
Have the battery capacity checked for its storage.
Check the running voltage at the battery and from the rear of the alternator and compare their results. 🤔

As above, low battery voltage causes all sorts of problems.
Since you drove it with no alternator output and lights on, the battery will be in a low state of charge, the alternator will not rectify that, the battery needs to go on a charger.

Hello peeps, I’m new! Yes a virgin, crow, infant etc! I have a 2004 L322 TDV6 vogue, I know it’s looking like a shat storm a comin! I’ve had it a fortnight! It was a bargain! I know! Anywho, up until 15:30hrs today it was amazing, I mean our dream car, a bold statement in know, but not when you consider my automotive history! 1st car, vw beetle in 1973, last cat disco td5. My wife fancied a B&M bargains trip so off we went, when upto speed into cruise control,50mph cushty, 3miles later a judder, slight squeal and searching for gear, quickly knocked cruise off and it settled for what felt like 2nd, pulled over asap and shut down, turned key to position 2 and it said gear safe program, I started and moved off, 1st second and nothing beyond, pulled off road and stopped, tried reverse, engine revs dropped but it wouldn’t move! So gently limped home. Now I’m no fool when purchasing vehicles, when looking I did the whole due diligence thing and the private vendor drove me around for over an hour both on and off road, no bangs bumps, scrapes etc, I’ve had 700mls trouble free motoring since so I’m not blaming him. I would value some genuine advice please. We need this car to function well and quickly as my wife is a/out to start a course of radio therapy, six weeks, 100ml round trip daily. Thank you everyone in advance.

Start this in a new thread, it'll get more attention.
Welcome to the madhouse and pictures always welcome.... Of the car of course 😂

A cheap reliable run about might be a good idea for your 100 mile round trip. It sounds like the gearbox is fecked which is going to be more expensive than a cheap run about.

+1^^^ always have a back up car when you own a Land Rover

Im struggling with creating a new thread Mark, I didn’t want to hijack a thread but at least got a reaction and thank you for that, every time I attempt a new thread it pops up “oops we have a problem, pleases list actual recipients” if I don’t I can’t list a thread. It’s twanging my twanger to be honest!

Choose Range Rover.

Then choose new Fred.

Use the drop down to choose L322. That will appear on the left of Range Rover.

Give it a title in the small box then type in big box.

Sounds like you are trying to do a PM using the envelope box.

I have sent him instructions as he PM'd me. Took me some time as we have a serious storm here with repeated power cuts.

sorry to jump on here late

hi all i’m hoping for a little help with my 2004 RR td6. when i bought the car about 7 months back it came up with a trans fail safe prog message on the dash but after turning off the ignition and back on the message went away. it has since happened about 3/4 times in the last 5-6 months.
However the message came on the dash last week and now my car is stuck in first gear (no reverse/neutral ect) i took it to the garage and the codes coming up were (transfer case faulty) & gear monitoring in 4th & 2nd &5th. Garage emptied my gearbox oil and there was some metal in there & suggests a gearbox recondition will solve the problem but before spending £2000+ i wanted to see if that’s definitely what will fix the car. this is my first RR so i have no idea what i’m doing or what to look out for. (gearbox was replaced in 2014 from previous owner)

The GM gearbox is a common failure item. The torque converter, oil cooler and pipes should also be replaced to ensure there is no metal debris left in the system. A Sonnax valve block should also be fitted.
