Bought car some weeks ago with a broken steering column. Got a good used one with car. Mounted it an used the existing sas. Everything worked ok until i got some hundred meter away. Got hdc,abs air susp inactive. Bought a hawkeye total to solve problem. Hawkeye are reading angle about 40 deg. when steering wheel and wheels straight. It reads angle to left and right when i turn st. wheel. When i try to calibrate i get communication error. I use dongle red 5078. Sas was ok before i mounted new steering column. What have i done wrong or? Very thankful for all kind of help?

first thing yeah. As long as a i can read angle when turn to l or r sas have to be ok. Or is it a communication or diagnosis line that is broken? Have checked that male and female plug is together. Will check later today if a pin could be damaged in plug.

Plug ok. seams to me that prosessor in sas won`t delete old info. Angle is now 44 deg. straight wheels and st. wheel. Could it be an idea to loosen steering column and move sas on splines until it reach zero an put it back? Could that help?

You need wheels straight and steering wheel straight then recalibrate the steering angle sensor with the hawkeye if it will do it, the pinch bolt at the bottom of the column should have gone in easy if it was lined up ok on the splines, you need to push the right buttons on the hawkeye no need to try moving any thing in fact you stand little chance of getting it right doing it like that.

pinch bolt slide easily. Hawkeye don`t communicate with sas. Was at a local stealer earlier. He is a land rover man from England. He couldn`t fix it. Right buttons? In meny i clicked on steering angle sensor , I deleted dtc and went into service and to calibrate. Hawkeye gives me a message. Communication error. Tried it several times. Will buy a new sas.

Did you use the sas off the old column or was there one on the replacement column ? If you do a search on fullfatrr forum a little while ago there was a link to a repair kit for the sas, that might be an option for you. Sorry just reread your original post see you used original sas.

i know about kit from Germany. But i do not think trouble are there. Sas was working great before i moved it. Feels like the prosessor keep it`s info. Won`t delete. and calibrate. Almost like an old cellphone that don`t like a new upgrade.

bought a new sas from gaza Egypt now. £ 120. Will connect new one loose first time to check comm. If new one work , is it enough to calibrate it or do i have to go to stealer to code it? Can i mount it and drive car with it after installing?

will try new one with hawkeye before installing it. Do it have to be coded or is calibration enough? Can i use car after installing it if it needs to be coded later ?

When I changed the column on mine I just put the sas on were I thought it was about right if its to far out it kicks in the abs when you turn a corner so at least I could use the car till I got it in for tracking and sas recalibrated (didnt have the bmw inpa software and cable at the time which I think will do the sas) as far as will a new sas need coding to car I have no idea thats a bit beyond my knowledge of it at this time, we could do with @Saint.V8 dropping in as he is the man that just might know. As we say over here suck it and see (fit it and see what happens) hope it works out ok and you let us know how it goes.

Thank you @Saint.V8 not something I knew but I do know the car dont like it if the sas is way off where it should be when I replaced the column on mine !

Then i got my new sas delivered. Tried it on plug under dash and it will communicate, but it will still have to be coded to car before calibration.

Fitted new sas today. Have to fond a stealer now for code and calibration. Only loose steering column 4 bolts and out with old ,in with new. ! hour 30 min.

Bit of progress then, wont your hawkeye code it to the car ? And I remember those 4 bolts well !
