Hi everyone,

I'm new to this site and im relying on you guys for some much needed help.

I've only not long had my 02 TD6, just recently I have been getting a trans fail prog light come on but leads to no issues at all, turn it on and off and it goes away.

Anyway today it came on twice, I left my house and went to pull away and it really struggled almost like the clutch was slipping in every gear inc manual mode. I haven't used it since this happened but have noticed recently it takes alot of revs to get it going.

Reverse and low range are still working fine.

Could this be a knackered torque converter or my worst fears and a failing gearbox?

I know it's very hard to diagnose on a forum but any help would be great.

Thanks
Carl

sadly both gearbox and t/c will need recon/replacement, the seller must of knew this and got rid quickly :(

Hi Carl

Sounds like your TQ has died

But I hope it hasn't done any damage to the rest of the gearbox at the same time !

Try not to use the car and get it sent to a transmission specialists on the back of a lorry

Thought you can flush the pipes and rad out to save forking out on new ?

I bought the range rover privately, the gearbox, suspension, powersteering were all spot on, ive only had the dam thing 1 week, it had a recon gearbox fitted in October this year however it appears the warranty is void as the previous owner didnt have the gearbox serviced at the intervals needed to upkeep the warranty.

I really dont like the sound of a £2000 bill, has anyone ever rebuilt a gearbox on one of these?

Surely if reverse still works and the low range still works would it be the gearbox?

Im going to get it to my friends garage, drain the oil, take off the rad and see if its new or ever been flushed and go from there.

if it had a recon gearbox fitted in October this year what service should it of have in that short amount of time ???

yes as you say...i would drain oil, remove sump pan and check the amount of ****e and metal filings you have in the bottom and stuck to the magnet..

have you got proof of this recon box that was fitted in October ?

From memory, Bemble is the member on here that is the gearbox man. These boxes are not out of scope for the home repairer, if your happy with the spanners and have a good sturdy clean bench then I would have a go. There are a few picture stories floating around with directions on how to re-build.

But personal coarse would be to go after the seller. If you`ve only had it a week you still have consumer rights to expect it to be of merchantable quality.

and even if you didnt have any rights id still be knocking at his door

I actually sold him my boxster and took this as part exchange as the Mrs wanted a Range Rover...ill blame her.

The guy is an offshore worker and have been in contact with him about the problems, i have a certificate to say the gearbox has been changed it was done by a specialist in Birmingham called SY gears? Any experience with them anyone?

Im unsure about the service intervals its just stated on the certificate that after 1000 miles or 1 month the gearbox oil had to be changed???

Ive tried calling but no luck yet.

Can anyone recommend and good gearbox specialist in the North East?

I know of no consumer rights on a private sale/purchase, it's buyer beware unless you can prove that the seller knowingly misled you, very hard to do especially as there has been a recent gearbox re-build and it drove well at the time of purchase.
With the sellers cooperation, you could go against the company that did the gearbox rebuild.

Main Problem with the GM box is as the TQ Lock Up Clutch solenoid valve starts wearing out this leads to lack of pressure holding the LUC in place and it starts slipping more than designed and wears the friction material out, this in turn goes into the oil and contaminates the solenoid valves more and leads to more wear and it becomes a vicous cycle....

In the end , the worst case is the valve block is shagged and all the friction material on the drive clutches is shagged due to the constant slipping due to lack of pressure from worn valve block....

You can recon the box yourself using new seals and friction plates etc, but the valve block will be beyond the scope of most home diy'ers unless they are brave enough, there is a company who do replacement valve blocks Sonnex, Solex or something like that (can't remember the name)....

As you say Bemble (or RRPhil as he is known on other Landy Forums) or JamesMartin are the men for the GB repairs/problems....

I'll keep trying to get hold of them and see what they say, they will no doubt try and fob me off.

If i get no where ill have a crack at it myself, how hard can it be..........

Yeah ive seen a few diagrams and photos i will photo and try and document everything so i dont get lost.

Lets just hope it doesnt come to that tho.
