I've Been quoted £1300 for recon of my gearbox should it need it. Same guy did my Audi S6 and that was fine. I'm still suspicious that they only use a universal fluid though...............but that's just me.
I'm sure that a universal fluid is a no no, Saint will confirm if I'm right.:eek:
 
You must use the correctly specified fluid only and definitely not a universal. I had a so called gearbox specialist (an idiot really) change the oil and filter on mine when I first bought it (was getting dreaded rumble etc). This was before I knew much about it. I went on holiday towing my tin tent and had nothing but trouble, and then found he'd used a 'universal fluid'. He refused to agree it was incorrect and even other so called experts said it was ok to use!!! I bought my own LT 71141 (I have the V8 and ZF gearbox) and had my own garage do the job. Rumble cured as well as excessive torque slip - and 10,000 miles later still running fine :)
Listen to the experts on this forum - I'm glad I did!!
 
As all the above, on the ZF it has been quoted that Dexron III is suitable, it is even an equivalent fluid.....that being said, the use of DexIII means you will need to change the fluid more regularly as the LT fluid is a long life fluid....

Knowing that my gearbox is on its way out, I chose to do an experiment.....I have done too fluid changes and used DexIII both times. She runs fine (aside from the TQ judder which was there before) but I have noticed that the box will tell you when it is due a fluid change.....shifts get jerkier and it sometimes judders a bit pulling away.....change the fluid and all is well again......first fill lasted about 8 months, and I am now just over 4 weeks since the last change.

Cost wise, the LT fluid is more expensive, but should last you 3/4 times as long....so DexIII could be false economy.

I will always continue to recommend LT fluid to others though.....not becase I am a hypocrite, but more because I know my box is on its last legs, and will need to be changed out, so what the hell......

But in the GM5 box you MUST use the correct Texaco fluid.....and nowt else.

Come on Ant, just whip the transmission out and swap out the TC and send your valve block up to uncle Phil.
You are far better than me at Rangey stuff and I know I had help but you could have it out and back in a day and the fluid is costing more than a refurb TC.

Sold the Ninety this evening....that hurt, that little bucket of fun is going to be sorely missed....so have some funds to get a refurbed TQC......and strangely you are quite correct, I am looking forward to doing the swap out....and yes, no need to ask, there will be a How To as well.....

Oh I agree, universal fluid is a No No. I'm sure they will even tell you that the fluid they use is the correct one or OK to use but we know only to use the correct fluid don't we. I was just thinking that soon as they do the rebuild, swap out the fluid yourself for the correct stuff. It would be cheaper to get them to do the build for £1300 and then just the cost of the correct fluid?
 
Thinking on this a bit more, maybe it would be better to leave in the fluid that the recon garage uses for the first 12 months warranty period and then swap out for the correct fluid after the 12 months is up? It would probably be Dexron III they use which is what I meant when I said universal fluid in my earlier post.

How did i miss this, tell me when lord .....tell me when, you will love it, i took ages to decide to do mine but once you start it's amazing how quickly you get in to it.
are you stripping out the transmission or just doing the TC.
We spent quite a bit of time inside the tranny and replaced any suspect parts but if you talk to Phil, he will tell you what you need to do and what what not to, or ask Saint, he is also a mine of information, ... oh hang on.....
