Hi Guys,
I have a L322 2002 model and have come to my car twice now with a flat battery, I know it is not the battery as this is healthy and usually full of life. I have done some digging around on this search engine and also spoken to my friend who works for BMW and it points to the fan on the HEVAC (heater system) over running and staying on after the ignition is off, causing the battery to discharge. Below is a quote from a previous post :-

'Fault traced to Regulator assembly under dash top panel. Half an hour to fix and £30 odd for part. LJGO 000021 Regulator Assy.'

I am pointing towards this but would prefer anyone else who has had this fault rectified on there L322 to tell me if this was the case for them aswell.

I have the same problem on my 2002 L322 petrol. Was it the HEVAC fan staying on?
 
Yes it was the fan staying on because of this part. It was very awkward to replace, being on your back in the drivers footwell. But part was replaced and have had no problems since.

This is great news - I am sick and tired of charging my Range Rover up every week so I'll fit the Hevac part and hope that's it - of not, I'll be back!!!:D

Before you replaced the part on the HEVAC unit did the fan unit itself make any noises or blowing air that was out of the ordinary? I only ask because my drain that has come back was originally from the Nav unit on mine and my HEVAC unit appears fine, no funny blowing or temp issues that have been reported in other threads?

I've disconnected the Sat Nav unit and my drain is now coming from something else. Just wondered if this faulty HEVAC unit was an obvious noise or something that i could check for.

No unfortunatly it didn't make any obvious noises. It made no sense to me ,to replace the part as I didn't really know what the part didb (and still don't). But I had blind faith because the symptons were the same along with the same inconveniances (flat battery). So went ahead and replaced the part (not expensive) and it never gave me a flat battery since. Hope this helps and good luck.

Thanks for the quick repsonse adam,

I went out earlier to re check on the red light near the gearbox lever and it was still on after 30 mins at least (indicating a drain). I've pulled the fuses for the blowers and locked it up/left it standing for 20 mins and the light has gone out now. I was going to pull the HEVAC unit out as well but just going to try and leave the car till tomorrow now without starting it to see if it helps.

Is the part number to cure it a main dealer part I take it? My HEVAC appears to work fine but if your's never made a noise then that sound promising for me sorting mine out. I had a 3 series BMW a good few years ago and the blower unit on that used to go crazy.

I'll get the part ordered and fitted and post back on here to help anyone else if it cure's my problem too.

Yes matey, it is a main dealer part. Worth trying for £30 as I know how frustrating it is !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry I'll stop mithering people soon, I promise. Rang the dealers at dinner and asked about the part listed above, which I bought. the parts guy also said possibly the more common fix was an updated harness kit which is usually fitted in the workshops and is the more popular part/fix. I ended up buying both items for around £60 plus VAT but the guy was pretty sure its the wiring kit that'll sort things out rather than the regulator?

The question I wanted to know is where does the wiring harness go cos I ain't got no instructions but I did once make a meccano crane when I was eight :D. Seriously I'm guessing it's behind the HEVAC unit? Just wondered if anyone's fitted one of these looms.

I'm going outside to have a look now anyway so I might have answered my own question

Could you tell me where roughly the HEVAC regulator is situated, my cars in bits on the driveway outside and I've replaced the relay and harness wiring kit (which incidently was the upgrade YNI500040K kit already) which was simple enough but can't see the other part up there. Is it a case of taking more of the dash off? I'm going back outside again but if you read this in the next hour I'd really appreciate knowing where it is.

Just a bit of feedback about my non starting problem posted two weeks ago. Everything is fine with my car now and it looked like my car already had the wiring harness upgrade fitted as the relay and parts numbers were identical to the new one (It is simple to replace once the Air con control panel is out of the dash). So therefore I'm guessing it was the heater regulator (Hedgehog?) that was causing the problem.

The regulator is actually not too bad to get to once you know where it is (up to the left of the brake pedal to the front of the bulkhead pretty much in line with the Air con controls). The item I replaced was all metal and the new unit is smaller and half plastic with a load of metal rods sticking out in a triangular formation.

Hope this helps anybody else suffering the same problems. Cheap simple fix at £30

HI thanks guys im new to this my fan was constantly on when engine was off, i had the wiring kit already, the cheap fix (LJGO 000021) regulator. done the job fitted in 20mins simple thanks
 
Im new to this , ive had a 53 plate range rover for aprox 5 weeks , and the heater or after burner ! , stays on so long ive had to jump start , well 7 or 8 times its in a so called GOOD gararge an hes waiting for the fan to come on. its been in this place for a week . thanks for all your feed back . as ill be telling him tom , as you lot obv know more than this div . THANKS X
 
had a P38, got rid of that end of last year as it developed the battery drain issue...bought a TD6, and after 2 months...got the same problem, tried new batteries..not the cheap Land Rover ones either...problem comes back after 2 weeks...(after battery can't take anymore of the life being sucked out of it) ..finally given up and its booked into Stratstone for a replacement HVAC regulator resister...supply and fit £150.89...everything is crossed that this sorts out the problem....i don't need to tell you guys how much of a prize tit you look jump starting a Range Rover every morning !!!!!...when Mr neighbor with hes Ford Mondeo (priced at £800) looks on with a smirk...and a car that starts every day.

Thought that resistor was a recall, should be free.
 
ok...A, ..how do i find out if mine has been done on a recall ?..(only owned this car 7 months)..B, ..if it has been done...any ideas on what else my problem may be ?
 
just phoned the dealership that serviced the car before i had it..checked and found the HEVAC has not been replaced..and alas...is NOT a warranty recall...damn shame that, but the chief techy there said its a very common fault on this model...which Land Rover are very aware of..but will not do a recall on (i wonder why ?..lol)...but at least i am now optimistic that my troubles will be over on the 21st of this month...going to throw in another new battery at the same time...just to be sure...if that fails...gonna throw in a gallon of petrol..swiftly followed by a match...lol, only joking.
 
just an update boy n girls...had the HEVAC regulator resistor replaced at Stratstone....so far so good...the old girl is starting first time as she should...even after leaving her all weekend...she used go flat after 8 hours....this cost a few pennies over £150...took exactly 30 mins..had a nice cup of coffee and watched TV while job was being done....i know i could have done the job myself for £30...but why take the chance ?....leave it to the people in the know, hope this info helps any other sufferers of the dreaded Battery drain.
