Hi

a customer of mine who's L322 Range Rover i sometimes do the odd job on has asked me to do him a new key. Now i know it has the BMW EWS module fitted & i've done quite a few BMW keys that use EWS.

The problem i've had is locating the EWS in the L322. I looked in the same place that it's fitted in the BMW's which is up above the pedals behind the dash but couldn't see it.

An auto elec i know says it's under the handbrake in center console so my customer removed some trim but he said he could only find a black box & no sign of a white/cream box which is what the EWS usually is, unless it's different in Range Rovers

thanks

Craig

So are you trying to sync a new key?? or change the whole key to a completly new key system??

The resync for a new key does not require you getting access to the EWS unit (not sure if the L322 has one - sure it has I have heard of it no idea where it is though)....you have to go through a boringly lengthy process:

Every signal from the remote handset contains the transmitter identification code and a rolling code. The BCU checks the codes and only responds if the signal is from a valid transmitter. During vehicle production, the remote handsets supplied with the vehicle are initialised to set their individual transmitter identification codes and synchronise their
respective rolling codes with the BCU. If a transmitter loses synchronisation with the BCU, or if a replacement or additional remote handset is to be used with the vehicle, the initialisation procedure must be repeated.

During the procedure, all remote handsets for use with the vehicle must be initialised.

Initialisation Procedure

1 Ensure the vehicle is unlocked and the driver and front passenger doors are closed.
2 Install a key/remote handset in the ignition switch, then turn the ignition switch to position I and back to position 0 in less than 5 seconds to put the BCU into the initialisation mode. Continue the procedure within 30 seconds of turning the ignition switch to position 0.
3 Remove the key/remote handset from the ignition switch.
4 Press and hold the unlock button for a maximum of 15 seconds. During this time, momentarily press the lock button three times within 10 seconds.
5 Release both buttons.
6 Successful initialisation is indicated by the BCU locking then unlocking the vehicle. If this does not occur, repeat step 4.
7 Repeat steps 4 and 5 with all other remote handsets belonging to the vehicle (4 maximum). Begin the initialisation of each remote handset within 30 seconds of completing the previous initialisation, or the BCU will drop out of the initialisation mode and the complete procedure will have to be started again.

as i said he wants a new key. A new key would be pretty pointless if it didn't start the car ;) which is why i need to find the EWS as my equipment programs the transponder directly into the EWS while it is disconnected from the car & hooked up to my laptop via an interface!

After i've done the transponder i'll program the remote, which i've done dozens of times with various BMW that use the same system ;)

So basically, all i need is the EWS location :D

Read the initilisation procedure above for syncing a new key...no need to access the EWS

Either Blackpool or Skegness. :D

that initialization procedure is purely for the remote locking. A brand new unprogrammed key will not start the car if the transponder isn't programmed to the EWS

If programming a key to start the car was done by the resync method you've mentioned then it would be a seriously crap security system & all you would need to do to nick a car is buy a virgin key, break into the car, ram a screwdriver into the ignition then go through the resync to program the new key/remote you have. Job done, drive away! But it doesn't work like that

The immob & remote locking are 2 totally separate parts in a key. Yes the transponder in a genuine EWS key is mounted on the remote circuit board but it works independently. In an aftermarket EWS key the transponder is a separate carbon type transponder, watch the vid in the link below, this is how an transponder is programmed to the EWS, again, nothing at all to do with remote locking resync

you are correct.

the post by saint is purely for syncing the FOBS - but the key wont start the car.

i do know though you dont have to remove the ECU to program new keys to the immobiliser

as i have synced new keys to my L322 using my faultmate extreme diagnostics and it worked :p
it uses the same sort of process the dealers would when syncing new keys to the ECU system

Oh blimey...more complexity...Jesus have Ze Germans got nothing better to do than add over complex systems to their cars .... :(

finally somebody who knows what they're on about! :D

Anyways, with the equipment I use for EWS keys it has to be removed from the vehicle & connected directly to my laptop. Exactly the same as in the youtube vid i linked.

All my other key programming equipment plugs straight into the diag port. Oh, apart from the BMW CAS equipment which works the same as EWS equipment

When you order a new key from Range Rover they do it to the reg & chassis number. The EWS usually has 4 transponder id's locked into it from new but the car will only be supplied with 2 from new. Then say 5 years down the line 1 of the keys has been lost & the owner goes to RR for a new key. RR then order 1 which will be programmed with the 3rd transponder id that's stored in the EWS.

So once the customer receives it the new key will start the car straight away as the EWS recognizes the transponder id but the remote needs to be synced

BMW is the same, including the newer CAS system
