Can anyone tell me what is actually done on the diff recall. Is the original diff taken apart, modified & then refitted? Since mine has been done I have had a oil leak. At 1st I was told it was a drive shaft seal but this has been replaced and diff is still leaking.

The diff comes out, stripped down, a new pinion bearing, collapsible spacer, seals etc. and a new modified drive flange. Then the pinion preload is set. The diff gets resealed and assembled and fitted back into the car. Once in, a new modified propshaft is fitted.

Lost count the amount of these I've done over the last year. At one point I was doing 3 a day for a couple of weeks, bloody killed me lifting them in and out every day!

we use land rover genuine black gasket sealer.

Wheres it leaking from? is it from between the case halves? it's unlikely that it is and the only way it could leak from there is if the casing was damaged by prybars when they stripped it.

Cannot tell. It is dripping off the bottom of diff casing and has already had nearside drive shaft seal replaced. This was done then within a week I could see oil dripping onto subframe.

you need to wash it off with brake cleaner and have a good look. All the seals should have been replaced when the diff was modified. I've never had one leak and its not a common thing anyway so whoever did it has made a balls up somewhere. Either a seal isn't fitted properly or they have damaged the casing.

Its booked back in middle next month again. If they have damaged casing is it possible the garage will fill with gasket sealer?

Yes thanks, seen it but just wondered if they completly stripped down or exchanged the unit with a modified one as when it was taken back for 1st leak I was told driveshaft seal would not be covered on warrenty of diff recall but they would replace as a good will gesture. I will find out what they blame next week when it goes back.

Hi P Carr,
I would be very interested of your outcome as I am having similar prioblems with oil leaks after I have had the recall work done, please find PM I have sent you explaining my Scenario.

Thanks................Adam

My 2002 4.4 HSE is going into the stealers next week for the diff replacement. I had mine replaced by a qualified Land Rover garage in 2007 when it crapped out and I have been asked to take in the receipt as Land Rover might well refund me the £600 cost. Woohoo!
