Hello again all,

You are probably begining to think I'm brake obsessed, but here goes another one:

Anyone used these: Front Brake Disc Drilled & Grooved (2) L322 02-05 DA4609 Island 4x4 - Specialists in Land Rover and Range Rover Parts and accessories for all models. UK and worldwide mail order.

or something similar.

Obviously normally L322 brake discs are vented, whereas these aren't, although they are drilled and grooved. I'm wondering whether they will give as good stopping power and if the lack of venting will make them overheat easily or if the drilled holes make up for it.

Anyway all thougths welcomed....

i think thats just a generic image, the pcd looks allot bigger than 120, and there far to small to be l322 fronts.
any vehicles we have ever fitted drilled and grooved discs to they always stay vented if they are vented type, if not they would make for one heavy ass disc as the equivalent solid discs are always much thinner!

You did not read the ad very carefully did you? It says solid discs shown but vented will be supplied. Solid discs are about 12mm thick the vented ones are 25mm thick. With pad wear you would have your pistons popping out with the solid ones.

Wammers - you are quite right. Bad reading skills on my part!

25mm? I thought L322 front ones were 30mm normally?

Mick - did you/your customers think drilled/vented were any better than the normal 'flat' ones out of interest? Or more just for the sporting look?

They maybe, was quoting P38 sizes as a comparison i don't know much about the L322. I do know however that there is no need to pay serious amounts of money for tricked up discs as the standard ones do the job very, very well indeed. Unless you are thinking of racing it around a track that is. When there maybe a slight advantage, other than that and the cosmetic value, which to me would be minimal, a waste of money.

I think most people that fit them it is just for the look, but having had drilled discs on a lot of different vehicles ( I have drilled my own on some)
they do make a difference, on day to day normal driving on somthing like a range rover that difference is very small, but as the price of them is cheaper than most other replacement discs ive seen its a win win situation.

With standard discs on the P38 (Non drilled), when you apply the brakes hard what happens ??, After the initial jolt that nearly sends you through the windscreen, the ABS cuts in because the wheels are starting to lock, the braking force is more than adequate and far better than many cars I have owned.
With the drilled discs, there is no change whatever as the ABS will cut in again as soon as a wheel lock starts to occur.
Absolutely a waste of money in my opinion.
If you want to delude yourself into thinking you have a high performance racing car..go ahead.

Good man Irish, straight to the point as usual. I of course am to nice a bloke to say anything like that. But it's the Kevin and his Corsa syndrome it seems to be spreading to Range Rover owners. Who to be quite honest SHOULD have more sense.

Bit of info for all the Kevs who want to make their Rangies look like Corsas.

Cross drilling of discs was used to aid disipation of heat and avoid warping. Still used on motorcycles (but the discs are much thinner, so need protection from warping, the discs are steel not cast iron and less prone to cracking under stress) No longer used on racing cars due to failure caused by cracking in holes causing discs to disintigrate.

Slots used to skim and remove glazing from pads so there is always new pad for maximum brake effort, also to get rid of brake dust. Still used on some racing cars but pad wear is much greater and not economic on road cars because of this.

All in all a cosmetic consideration only. Disfunctioal in every other aspect.

Thanks for the comments guys. I am NOT trying to 'kev' up my car, nor would I wish to, I was genuinely asking whether such discs were better than standard ones - as a means of stopping 2.5 tons of metal, which I think is a reasonable question to ask.

Wammers -interesting facts about the grooved discs, didn't consider the increased pad wear, but I guess that makes sense!

Irishrover - I don't have a P38.

That's what the grooves are for to shave the pads and reduce fad due to glazing.

well despite all the comments i fitted them discs to my l322 and in heavy usage they are much better than standard ones, they do take a long time to bed in though. mine took over a thousand miles before all the machine marks where gone, there is a definate improvement over standard.

Is that not more down to the new (different?) pads you'd have fitted when you fit the discs?:)

somone needs to call overfinch quick to tell them there drilled discs are pointliess and there just wasting peoples money:D

That about sums it up. Cosmetics come at a very high price sometimes. But them putting "We charge and extra £1000.00 for something that look pretty but are not required" in their specs book would hardly boost their sales figures would it? Overfinches business is wasting peoples money and ego massaging.

really? That's a very narrow minded statement, surly then that puts any special edition vehicle from a manufacture or not in the same league?
brabus mercedes? alpina bmw? ruff porsche?...i could go on
Ive drove a full fat p38 range rover overfinch, I wouldnt have the wallet for it new, but id say it was anything other than a waste of money or any ego massage for its owner from new, there were no exterior badges on it, all IMHO of course, each too there own.

Of course each to their own. Nothing wrong with people wasting their money if they really want to. I am sure it gives great satisfaction to the less well off or maybe homless to see a tricked up version of something that when standard they could live off the price of for ten years. I am sure it is a terrific morale booster for them, and not a status symbol for the driver in any way shape or form.

Wow, this thread is getting interesting now! Pretty much turned into 'to do up and rangie or not' morality question!

Wammers, whilst I agree with much of what you say, that last post is a bit far - if you believe that then surely nobody should drive any sort of high end car just in case it makes some poor person feel bad about their lot in life?! All sounds a bit communist to me!

I'm not saying I like all of Overfinch's stuff, some of it is horrifically bad taste, but why not make your car look a bit nicer, inside or out? If it makes you smile each time you walk upto it (which is why most people do it I would think), then surely its worth it? I stuck a SS exhaust on mine, now it sounds lovely and warble-y like a V8 petrol should, and every time I give it the beans it makes me (and passengers) smile. (plus apparently it gives an extra 17bhp, not that that is necessary or needed).

Also (and this is contentious), I think people actually like seeing nice cars out and about. When I see a tricked rangie, or better still something like a Lambo, I love it, I don't think '****, I wish I was richer and could afford something like that, I hate that guy', but rather I appriciate seeing nice cars. Think it was a TG episode when one of them said driving a super car is like a public service - it makes everyone you go past smile and go 'ooooohh', haha!

Anyway I'm now soooo far off topic....

well said voguely!;)

Id go for the drilled discs, there cheaper than most oe replacement discs ive seen for the l322, surly that will keep most happy as they can hardly be called a waste of money then:D
but lets face it if any of us were really that bothered about not wasting money would we really be driving l322 rr's??
kind of puts it in perspective then really!:p
