Hi all,

Does anyone know if you can retro fit auto lights to a 2003 RR. Can you change the light switch and add a light sensor?

Pda

I imagine you can fit anything if you wallet is deep enough, although I haven't heard of anyone doing this mod before. Are you technically minded enough to start fiddling with the wiring yourself?

As an aside - why bother? Whats wrong with using your eyes to see when its dark, then turning a switch, not exactly arduous! And its one less thing to go wrong on a car already full of electric gizmos ready to break at any moment given an excuse!

I would be really interested in this upgrade, I had auto lights on my previous car and I do miss it on this one. If you want we could work together on this project, I'm sure it cannot be too hard to retro fit as the 05/06 model has it and I'm sure it was still based on the BMW communcation data buses the switch is just that, A switch, it tells the light check module to turn the lights on so you would be able to change the switch and fit the sensor and just upgrade the light check module to support the auto lights option

I just wondered if anyone had done this. I'm not sure if any RR's were fitted with auto lights before 2006/7. I've re-built a Polo G40 from the chassis up (not a RR I know). It's not so much when driving the car but when the car is parked in an area with no lights. I live in an rural area with no street lights so it's very useful. I also have a C Class Merc with auto lights and when dark the lights come on when you open the car. I know the RR has puddle light's on the wing mirrors but they are rubbish.

I did think it should be doable as I've read a few BMW forum's relating to changing switches etc. My only concern is the sensor would need to have a clear view of the sky and the rain sensor area doesn't look as though it has space for another sensor. But I'm sure you could place the sensor closer to the dash below the heating elements on the windscreen. Have you seen the switch with the auto slection on it? I havn't but I would imagine it's the same dimensions etc

Yes you are correct, the switch is the exact same size/design with the auto feature, even in the latest 2011 model its the same size/shape
