I've currently got the ZF 6HP26 geabox out for rebuild after it went south - juddering in every gear when under load. This will be its third 'box, but I have done 190k, miles although none of if off road or towing. Have already replaced the front air springs and all the front arms and ball joints - lots of large hammers and gas toch involved !.

Other than the usual fluid changes, anything else I should look at whilst she is up on the lift ?

The only other item (other than a myriad of fluid leaks) is the air con compressor being overly noisey when engaged, but not sure if that is a compressor / condenser replacement job - not done much with ac sytems before. And obviously the side steps are rotted through, so taking them off - just looking for replacements atm.

TIA

Check the sills and rear wheel arches for rot when you take the steps off.

just an update on the gearbox saga…

1. Up on a lift, removed both prop shafts and subframe, gearbox out. A bear of a job and bloody heavy, needs plenty of help. Took it for overhaul (£1,200 - torque converter + plates) Refitted, found selector arm would not move to allow cable to be attached. Removed gearbox et al, back to shop, reset it, back to workshop, accidentally moved it and got it locked again. So we took off the sump and reset it ourselves. Now ‘just’ need to refit again…

Wow, sounds like a right battle. You really are determined to get this sorted!

Thanks - yes I’ve got two of those ! Thinking it is my next project. Would appreciate any tips, is it a wire brush and filler job, or cut out and weld in a whole new panel ?
The nearside rear arch on my S/C was rotted through, yes I could probably have bashed it in and clarted fibreglass and filler into it but I opted for welding new metal in.

When you remove the arch liner you will also be faced with a seriously rusted reinforcing panel on the leading portion of the arch tub...

and all that is before going further south behind the plastic sill cover !

I could have kept goldfish in my spare wheel well anol.
