The studies I've seen from Canada and the US which has had DLRs since the 90s (side lights have to activate on ignition) is that they do not increase safety, some reports suggest the opposite as they tend to attract your eye and you will steer in the direction you're looking.
They are only a legal requirement for new cars sold after 2012.

Day running lamps are compulsory on new vehicles from 2011 on. I think on some cars they can often cause a bit of excess dazzle which itself is an offence but that's the law makers these days and yet another double standard.

Lights on during the day used to be the one thing that bikers had to differentiate ourselves to be a bit more visible to the blind tin can drivers. Now we don't even have that 
I personally think that if another driver can't see a bloody great P38 coming towards them, half a dozen LED lights aren't going to make much difference!!!

wasnt DLR the reason volvos used to get the **** taken out of them ? Personally I think DLR looks crap , however , I have used the DLR from Greenwich to Bank , nice little run ;-)

for a proper OEM look change your front fog lamps to LED's then wire to come on as DRL.
i didn't like the Audi style LED's that people are fitting to their cars at the moment, so opted for this.
does the p38 have front fogs in the bumpers like the l322 ?
Yes, but they're the 6"x4" ones that just look like fog lights.
Anyway, I'm in the camp that says -if you can't see a Range Rover coming at you, you shouldn't be out alone.

Quite right. If you cant see a Range Rover in front of you them some Xmas tree lights won,t make much difference

Construction and use regs. Even the spacing between different types of light is specified in some cases, for example brake lights and rear fogs.
Trying to put a link up to test manual. But the bugger keeps putting wrong thing up. If this works go to lighting and take a look. Moving side lamps into flasher lamps would seem to be a fail. MOT Testers Manual

Virtually identical to my kitchen under cabinet lights.
No it turns on the front and rear side lamps with ignition. DLR regulations in the countries that use it are front and rear lamps. There is no posing lamp option as far as i am aware.
