Just acquired a 1996 disco v8 3.9 auto duel fuel, and when driving it knocks sounds to be coming from the middle to the front of the car.

I have checked the prop shafts for play and they are fine
I have checked all the fluid levels and they are fine i had to drain some out of the front diff though.
It seems to happen at around 20mph up to 40 but not sure if at higher speed it is louder when on the throttle and when slowing down without brakeing I tyred braking to see if it was something there but that made. No difference

I'm not sure if it has something to do with it but when in drive waiting at traffic lights the idle hunts and nearly stalls I try to put it in park or neutral and makes. No difference until I rev it apart from that the engine and gearbox are both smooth
Any advice appreciated jake

does it happen when you pull away? the gearbox can sometimes wear on the shaft that links the gearbox to the transferbox. if its constant, it may be the front diff or propshaft. chock the wheels, put it in neutral and give both propshafts a good shake at both ends.

check the diffs there shouldnt be any free play in diff flanges at all ,check doughnut on rear prop, jack a wheel up in turn and rotate it by hand straight and in full lock

Ok cheers I will give that a go too I'm just hoping its nothing to do with the engine/ gearbox or transfer box

If you start the engine, leave the gearbox in neutral, then gently raise the revs to about 2500rpm, does it still make the noise?
