Hi all I've got a problem with my 2004 V8 4.4 L322.. going over rough road, pot holes and speed bumps and I can hear pretty loudly some knocking coming from the front end.. I've replaced all the bushes, ball joints and drop links on both sides and its still the same .. its driving me nuts now, its not like its a rattle or anything its loudly knocking its tits off ! Guys I need your help anyone got any suggestions on where to go from here ?

Not changed any struts recently, it's been like this for about 1 year since it started, but just can't locate it, one thing when it's lowered ..I.e.motorway mode it does seem to be less obvious as though what ever is knocking is under more strain / tension, is there anyway of testing the knock on the strut without changing it At a cost of £300 bucks ?

mine has a knocking and it's been diagnosed as the lower arms and upper arms are shot, the thing i was advised is do not fit the cheap britpart items they don't last, i've been quoted on delphi units to replace mine.

Mine are all on order as we speak, delphi arms with moog ball joints should be ok

Only thing is the noise comes from both sides when each goes over a pot hole and yet the o/s strut was changed about 6months ago for a Delphi ..Defo not a Dunlop..

I would still check the struts.
You say you replaced all the ball joints, did you also replace The tie rods (the rack end??)

All the drop links both bottom and top ball joints and arms both sides including track rod ends ..

Basically everything circled in red i guess?

Although i don't think the anti roll bar bushes are a common fail

That only leaves struts or steering rack but if the knocking isn't coming through the steering then I wouldn't have thought that would be the issue.

Have you got any wheel nuts on it ?

The last thread i followed through like this was the struts which is the link I sent you earlier.

Also go over and check everything again.
Don't just assume because it's a new part it's fine as it could be faulty.....as I found out with the brand new dunlop struts

Yea I've Defo got nuts on it ! The only thing like you Saud is the strut or inner rack rods as the outer ball joints have been replaced but I only get the knock when on the move not stationary, if it was the track rod I'd pick it up rocking the steering stationary ..ill see if I can Jack it up and try and lift the strut as per your link to the other post ..I've been been back over everything just to make sure all was well and I did find a recently (6month) bottom ball joint knackard and replaced but still the same ..the only reason I changed the roll bar bushes was because it was all that was left apart from the strut and inner track rod bar ..do they fail much on rangies though ?

I've just done one side of mine today with everything apart from the steering rack ball joints, i don't always have a knocking noise but I knicked a couple of the seals when I split the ball joints to do my outer CV joints.

When you changed the drop links, did you remove the washer off of the top ball joint on the old link, it's obscured by my red oval on the earlier picture but is labelled HW1. I nearly left it on my old link rod and when i did the top nut up it bottomed out before fully tightening when it was missing. Rave also mentions about it being hardened and only fitting one way round.

Just a thought

Went to my local LR specialist today to sort out their cctv and in doing so asked the boss to listen and see what he thought ..after a drive he said it sounded Like the antiroll bar ..I placed it over a pot opened up both doors then a fitter and I rocked the car whilst he looked and it only turned out the 3 month old link bar ball joint was f##ked ! Straight from bearmachs ! Not impressed, I've just bought two new ones and I'll fit them Tom.. looks like I did all one side then 6 months later the other ..by which time the first ones fitted had failed ..Gutted ..but could have been worse ..I'll change them Tom and get back to you all ..frustrating or what ..and now it's decided to mark it's place like my pet dog by leaking oil from the rocker covers ..another job on the list !

Good find, make sure you get the top washer in place.
I have done my cam covers recently as others have so if you need help, that's if you have the M62 4.4 V8 of course else I haven't got a clue.

I'm going to be fitting CCTV to my range soon as well as my house so you might be getting asked some questions........

Not a problem cctv is my business so feel free to give me a shout info@ispycc.tv
as for the rangie change both drop links (oem) and noise gone can't believe the last ones only lasted 3-6 months. .and then took it turn to fail ! As for it marking its territory looks Like the r/h bank rocker gasket needs doing so I'll just do both ..thanks for all your help ...
