Not sure if anyone can help but there’s a horrible knocking noise coming from around the front of my series 2a ! I’m not very mechanical but ill try to explain and if anyone can help it would be amazing as desperate to get to good wood next month!

It seams to come from the gear box area and strangely when i put a small amount of pressure on overdrive knob it seams to disappear! I literally need to rest my hand on it and it stops there seams to be about a couple of mill play in linkage that’s all ! Also it seams to improve when driven for a while ,

The knock is very loud and it seams to vibrate throughout the floor !! Any idears would be welcome thanks ian

Take out the middle seat and hatch and have a look at the linkages and if there's anything obvious that could be the cause. Have a close look around the handbrake drum too.

Thanks for the reply John I’ve done those bits it doesn’t seam to be coming from handbrake crum sorta looks to be coming from gearbox its so strange i just put the smallest bit of pressure on the overdrive knob and it does seam to go ! Thinking it may be the overdrive its self but sounds like it’s further towards the front of the car iv also disingaued the free wheel hubs and it still does it so think that cancels out ujs ?? I maybe wrong new to this Landrover stuff !

You need to get a passenger to listen and try to find where the noise is coming from while you drive. Get a long steel tube, screwdriver or something similar to use as a listening device. Put one end against various likely spots and the other end against your/his ear. A mechanics stethoscope is better and they are cheap enough from Amazon.
I had a similar problem with a Fiat Panda, it made a noise just like shot big-ends. I even had the engine out and checked them, only to find that they were fine. It turned out that the noise was being made by the gear linkage, just a bit of wear here and a bit of wear there... A hand on the gear stick cured the knocking. Taking the engine out wasn't a complete loss: I fitted a new clutch while it was in bits.
Try looking for places where the linkage is touching against the bodywork, which it shouldn't do, that could make odd noises.

Thanks that’s brilliant advice I appreciate your response will try that , hopping it’s something straight forward !

Are you sure 4wd is disengaged as even with freewheel hubs disengaged front prop will turn if 4wd is in.

Good chance the gearbox or OD linkage is hitting the tunnel, probably becuase its moved on an old gearbox or engine mount. Makes a serious amount of noise.
