knocking box rears its ugly head again.....:(

With the help of you guys here I thought I had it cracked (not literally) but its still hapening.

If its been driven in a forward gear for a wee while its all good and smooth but if I go into revers after she's been sitting still I'm still getting the most fecking horriffic juder that sound like the box is trying to pull itself apart.

I think it may be the central dif/transfer box as the transfer stick seams to bounce back a little if I pull it hard to the right (unlock). Not sure but I'm worried again.

Any ideas what it could be, any solutions?

Also how much it would cost to fit a new transfer box, I can sorce the part but what about fitting as its not somthing I would atemp myself.

This happened on mine soon after i replaced the transfer box - it was just the hand break catching on what is normaly the trailing shoe, but in reverse becomes the leading shoe so is much more prone to catch. - The easy way to check is to pull the hand break lever up SLOWLY when in reverse and see if it gets worse with only minimal movement

Try screwing out the adjustment peg a couple of turns and see if that helps.

Does it do it if you let is free wheel backwards with both boxes in N.

Fitting the transfer box is actualy quite a straight forward job - I did mine on a hill side in the Lakes last winter with it snowing around me after it gave up the go in the middle of no-where

Its actualy quite stright forward if you have a chain winch, remove the middle seat base and the flor panel under it, and make up a wodden frame out of 2x4 to take the weight. It takes about a day to do it completly. Not sure on costs - depends where you go. If you find a local friendly mechanic then not too much, if you goto a dealer then the skys the limit!

Hand brake would make a lot of sense as it is only happening when its been applied and then released, if I rive forwards and presumably release and seizing it doesn't happen.

I'll check this out at the weekend and let you know the out come. Thanks for the response, lets hope this fixes it.

I am prity sure it will do. I suspect that when you had it in fora service they adjuted it for you:mad: and your drum may have been distored slightly into an oval shape and when you go back it starts to bind every 1/2 turn.

You may find that you need to adjust the cable end or the trailing end adjustment - i suspect the latter

Once it is set you should never have to adjust it as it never does any dynamic breaking as unlike cars who use the drum breaks for stopping obviously landys don't
