Got a problem I can't trace on the freelander. It's a weird hollow knocking noise when the car rocks from side to side. Most noticeable when going over speed bumps. It sounds like something is rocking side to side and tapping the underside of the car. Had it up on ramps today and tried to trace anything loose and I can't. The backbox outer skin has started peeling, but I've secured that down to eliminate that and it's still knocking.

What else should I take a look at? Nothing is obviously loose and I can't see any spoiling or fouling on the underside to suggest which parts are knocking.

Any help would be appreciated.

hmmm, check the front anti roll bar isn't knocking on the suspension struts. Might be doing this if it's lost one of the stops that keeps it central.

Hi i`ve got the same problem again nothing seems obvious drop link has been mentioned but my knock is o/s rear !

Right just been out to it, grabbed the roof rails and rocked the car side to side. It sounds like it's coming from the passenger side front wheel/suspension. Put my head in the car and the donging noise I hear when it rocks onto te passenger aide from outside is consistent with the knocking I can hear within the car. Checked the anti roll bar and it seems nice and tight. Any ideas? Could it be the suspension making a donging noise (bring on the dong puns!).

Mine (S reg, from new) always had a bang from the front suspension going over humps. I assumed it was a design feature.

Could be drop links ,Change both as they are not too expensive and if you only change side where knock is it wont last as other side being worn will probably knacker it again

The anti roll bar can still be nice and tight and still bang on the strut.

Other things to check are:

Anti roll bar drop links
Lower arm ball joint

These are the most common to go. It could also be something really simple, make sure all bolts are nice are tight. Especially at the top of the strut in the engine bay.

Have a similar problem with a squeeky knock, most noticable when crossing a speed bump. I get a double noise, first when front wheels mount the bump, then when the rears pass over it. Have replaced wishbones and ball joints, as rubbers were torn anyway, wishbone bushes, drop links and arb D bushes. I thought the rear subframe cracking issue had been sorted by 02MY, the bolts seem bloody tight!
All obvious things like exhaust mounts or fouling checked. The squeek-knock led me to suspect rubber bits first, there is no heavy bang or thump, also very speed dependant.
Cheers

Well still haven't tracked it down but got it going up on ramps today. Whilst underneath I found that the outer skin of the backbox is peeling away and another sidestep bracket has rotted and is about to drop. Today the steps come off and I try to source a replacement backbox with twin tailpipes.

Have stuck the outer skin down for now as it's not blowing and this hasn't hanged a thing with the knock so I'm certain it's coming from the front.

Happy freelandering days

Usual suspects for front knocking are /

Droplinks (cheap & easy)
Wishbone balljoint (replace whole wishbone - it's easier)
Upper strut mount loose or knackered (try tightening the large centre nut first)
Wishbone bushes - particularly rear (less likely but relatively easy to take off & check rear bush - replace only with complete bush & housing assy either used or new as you'll struggle to press in a new bush to your existing housing)
Antirollbar Mounts & centre stays (easy to check with car on ramps)
Track rod end (cheap & easy)

when you went through the water under the bridge, did you run over a troll and he is stuck in the chassis and trying to get out? And the shock of the water to your car is causing it to fall apart. Good luck:D

haha, well that water had caused the step brackets to fall apart. If they had dropped going any kind of speed it would have been a serious accident. Only one of the bolts was really securing them to the chassis, once the bolts removed it seemed that the rust was a stronger joint than the bolt. All off now and it looks a lot better anyway. Onto the annoying knocking, then fixing the rear window regulator, and finding the cause of the damp floor in the boot toolbox cubby. Then to do the Jatco auto fluid...... The List goes on.

Just a quick update. It was the anti rollbar link that was worn. Given a good wobble up on the ramps there was a load of play in it, and the knocking noise could be replicated. All replaced with a new part and good as new. I think it must have been going for a while as its much quieter and tighter now down the front.

chassis/subframe mount!
Hi all pulled in to a small garage today on the chance they could check my suspension . they soon found my knock o/s DROPLINK they even went to the local LR dealer for the part ! which was cheaper than a unipart one cost was a very fair 39 quid ! you can still get good service from a garage nowadays ! back to the knock it shows how sound travels under the car :)

Yeah I agree. I would have been convinced it was coming from the exhaust knocking, if it wasn't for my wife saying she could feel it by her feet on the passenger footwell.

Was the £39 including labour? If so thats very cheap as I paid £30 for the part.

Hi 39 pounds part and labour ! id just been to to the LR dealer but they seemed too busy so i came away two miles on the way back to our caravan my wife spotted said garage outstanding service :)

That's really cheap considering the price of the part. Maybe you should share the garage name on here, or in the good garage thread.
