Hi, I have a 200tdi defender which makes a knocking sound at higher revs, but not at lower revs. It gets louder as the revs build up. A mechanic has had the rocker cover off and found nothing wrong. He did say that there is a tiny bit of play in the turbo turbine, which is wearing something away inside and could be letting vaporised oil into the engine. Could this be the cause? As far as i know, it doesn't smoke while running, just a good sized black puff on startup, when either warm or cold. Or could the injectors be the issue.

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Cheers

the black smoke on start up is a 200tdi thing they all do it. It could probabley be oil going in to the engine through the turbo

ok, so does that mean a new turbo or is it worth trying to get the old one fixed? Has anyone tried doing this themselves? I have heard that you can buy a kit with all the bearings etc.

I'd try to work out where the noise was coming from before buying stuff to change ...

Does the knocking increase with revs? Does it do it when driving only, or when stood still as well? Is it related more to road speed than engine revs? Does it start at the same point in the rev range in every gear?

Awkward to diagnose 'a noise' without hearing it ...
