Good afternoon,
I'm hoping someone may have an answer to my problem. I have a 2006 (56) defender 110 xs which makes a loud clunk when turned to full lock either way. I suspected a cv joint/s was on its way out. So I removed the joints and shafts on both sides for inspection. They seem to be perfect. Whilst the vehicle was on axle stands I started it up and turned the steering from lock to lock, the loud clunk is still present without the cv's and shafts there. So it's oviously not the them. The vehicle has done 79,000 miles and has had a very gentle life.
Any ideas would be most appreciated.

Best wishes

Steve

You need to get someone to turn the wheel lock to lock and have a look / listen to identify where it is coming from. Could be a collapsed swivel bearing, give the wheels a good levering in the 12 and 6 position, if the clonk is in the 9 and 3 position could be a track rod end. Could also be a disintegrated panhard bush.

I would check the following
Stop locks
Damper/damper bushes
Any bushes relating to the steering mech
Panhard rod
Steering column UJs

+1 for the swivel bearings/bushes. I have experienced the same noise due to a worn bearing. Get a pry bar in there and look for movement. Cheap replacement parts, but heavy work getting the old bearing races out.
I recommend putting the new ones in the freezer before fitting. (don't tell the wife).
