Was the failsafe message displayed before you started the engine?

To be honest Bemble, I didn't pay much attention to the display and the pixels are really bad so I only know it said trans failsafe when I pulled over near to home, I did notice that the display showing what gear is selected was not on either. Would this make a difference?
 
did he mention there was gearbox issues then ??

the only mention of any problem described an occasional flutter on up shift at low rpm and low cruising speed. To be honest when I test drove it, I didn't notice anything, off course now I seem to get a vibration just before a gear change.
 
Are you a trader? No - then there's no such thing as a trade sale - either it was sold for spares or repair (clearly documented) or it has to be fit for purpose. (working as designed)

Deny all knowledge of the "flutter" conversation and take him to the small claims court - if he is a dealer then IMHO he was fully aware he was selling you a Range Rover with a knackered gearbox in which case any agreed faults should be documented and the car sold for spares or repair.

The flutter/vibration at low speed (30-40 mph) is sign the Torque Converter LUC is on its way out.....

If not dealt with accordingly, it can lead to Trans Failsafe issues....

Bemble is an L322 gearbox genius, heed his advice well. He has helped dozens of others on here with gearbox issues.

As the rest have said, the dealer obviously knew it had gearbox issues, as they are very well documented and any dealer worth their salt will know the cars they sell and any potential faults and symptoms.

He was obviously just waiting for the right ( or wrong) person to come along and flog it to them.

Sorry bud, get it resolved and you'll love the Range Rover driving experience.....until something else fails....yes they are unreliable and very expensive!!!
 
It seems a lot of these boxes fail around 100k :/ personally I'd not touch it until you've sorted a plan out with the dealer. If you start messing with it it might affect your warranty..

If he hasn't given you a actual warranty look up "14 day return after purchase clause" basically your allowed to take anything back if it falls short of what it was sold to do I.e it's not fit for purpose

I think it may be worth getting the codes read, especially as the gear selector indication on the dash is disappearing. You may just be lucky and it turns out to be as simple as a P0705 (inhibitor switch) fault - but I wouldn’t get your hopes up too much

Hi Bemble, to be honest, the display pixels are very poor so I only really noticed what it said when I got home, the only thing really noticeable on the dash was no display of D.

If you drive it in manual mode, it seems fine and the display shows what gear you are in okay.
 
Many thanks chaps for the words of advice, the trader has offered to have his mechanic put it on a diagnostic machine to bring up any codes on Monday afternoon, although looking on here I don't hold much hope of a simple fix so can see this becoming a drawn out argument probably all the way to court. Learnt a big lesson here, when I come out of the other side of this drama I'm still keen to have a Range Rover because I like the way there drive, maybe not this one at the moment but I get a good idea of how a proper one should drive.
 
For a skilled mechanic with all the right equipment its not a major job to swap out the transmission or pull it apart and replace the torque converter if they know what they are doing.
i had a local auto specialist offer to take mine out, rebuild it, replace the torque converter for a maximum of £1200 all in with half of that labour i would guess.
if he doesn't fancy a battle he might meet you half way or just get it done, you never know...

True, I'll have a better idea of the situation and his stance on the issue after his mechanic has had it on diagnostics, my gut feeling is that he wont want to know about fixing it or taking it back, but we'll wait and see.
 
If taking it back is an option id maybe consider just cutting your loss and finding a better one. It'll work out just lightly mention small claims court as a last resort and its amazing what will suddenly be possible ;)
 
ok..for some dumb reason i thought it was a p38..so no sub 200..opps..
 
i had the same problem , i had to get the gearbox rebuilt by a land rover specialist which cost £1,000 i was lucky as the guy i bought it from 4 days previous said that he would go halves with me and he did.
if i remember correctly it was the 1&2 gear selectors that went.when i pulled away it would only go into 3rd gear and not select 1st or second.
hope this is of some help.

Cheer peterboz, tbh I am liking the car so if he offered to go halves on the repair, I would go for that but well see what conversation we have tomorrow.

gearbox rebuild im afraid by the sounds of it
it will get worse if you use it

ive needed it a few times and everytime the guys are right and very helpful
 
Bit of an updated, took the RR over to his mechanic, put it on his snap on diagnostic machine, a couple of faults came up;
low voltage
solenoid ( not sure which one )

The transmission temp was around 100 degrees, not sure if this is good or bad.

Anyway this didn't really solve anything so he took it for a test drive and sure enough he felt this vibration, so he spoke to the dealer with the view that it should go for a more in depth test. The dealer is arranging for it to go into a local LR garage for a full diagnostic check and so what that says.
