Hi all

Have started a rebuild project - photos can be seen here - https://www.landyzone.co.uk/land-rover/1998-lhd-300tdi-rebuild.358488/

The steering box is close to kaput -

Lots of play and leaking like a sieve.

Under normal circumstances, I would probably order a refurbished one (Adwest??), but with the current lock down getting parts sipped to my part of the world (Southern Europe) is proving challenging.

So what are my options?

- Leave it on and replace at a later stage?
- any temp fixes people can suggest?

Thanks

Try some of this snake oil recommended to me by @Hicap phill as it worked for me. The old four bolt is on my to do list but for now it's slowed the leak.

I added a glug of brake and clutch fluid to the PSF to fix a leaking steering box seal. Worked a treat.

As v8250 said, it can be rebuilt. The main shaft may need machining though. Where I come from we rebuild boxes all the time but in most instances, a simple re-kit will not do the job. We'll have to have the shaft machined.

How will putting new seals in remove play?

It wont but if there is no play a set of seals can sort it. Given the mess all over the box it looks like something at the top of the box or even above it is leaking.
A good clean up and then see where the leek is and check for movement in the output shaft.

Have you tried to adjust the box? I thought I was gonna need a new one. Managed to adjust all the play out of it. That and a new seal could keep you going for along time. Look up on adjusting it. There's a few steps to do. Can only be done with the steering straight. Hope you can sort it.

Cheers Steve

That would be my first port of call, try adjusting the thing before shelling out on replacing all the seals.

I'd go on youboob first as messing about with the adjuster can be dangerous and reduce the steering range if you don't know what you are doing .

Thanks for all the suggestions. Will be taking a closer look next week when i can get back in the workshop and see if anything can be done. Worse case, I have found a scrap yard with 4 x 300 TDI's, so will go and pull buts from them.
