Hi all,

Weird one this: when i start my 3.9v8 110 there is a horrid kind of dry grindy noise for about a second, then it stops. Noise happens when the truck has started, not when it's trying to start. The nose is coming from the front of the gearbox/back of the engine, hence me wondering about the flywheel the truck always starts, but i am a little worried about the noise.

Anybody experience anything similar?

Steve

No, starter seems fine, and i think it's coming from a different place, closer to the cab floor.

On further inspection it's more of a tinkling higher-pitched sound. Never does it after the 1st second.

Try starting it hand brake on, in gear and with the clutch down, this will effectively lock the gearbox stationary. if the sound is still there then you have proved it isn't a gearbox bearing issue so you can eliminate that.

Are you sure that the noise is coming from the back end of the engine?

It sounds as though it could be the timing chain tensioner wheel, as I had something similar a number of years back.

Once it was running everything was OK again and the sound went away.

Just thought ... your V8 does have a chain chain instead of a rubber chain doesn't it?

Interesting point...I'll try and confirm where the sound is coming from (i'll need to find a friend...!). Fairly sure it has the standard metal chain.
