Just been reading all the threads on MPG and am gutted with what I'm reading, My 300tdi auto will not do more than 20 to the gallon, what the bugger is going on? Just come back from a 400 mile round trip 90% m/way no faster that 70 and still cudn't get over the 20 mark.

Just serviced, all oils filters changed etc EGR taken off, the only thing I can think of is the cat knackered? the engine always feels strangled and choked and is no way near as free flowing/revving as my old 200tdi, its done 106k any thoughts?????

No more shiite snake oil treatments either, thanks very much!

Hey Girv, I've got the exact same problem, getting around 21 mpg at the moment (see other thread I posted). I have an EGR blanking plate and decat pipe sat here ready to fit. I'll let you know what happens when the decat is done, problem is finding time to do it - very busy at the moment. It's annoying when you read what sort of mpg others are getting. Also a neighbour 2 doors away has a 300 TDi same as mine only theirs is manual and mine is an auto. They do lots of short runs and tows a horse box and still gets nearer 30 mpg out of theirs. I used to own a Ford Explorer 4.0L V6 petrol that had better mpg and I got rid of it because if the fuel economy.

Its more of a particle collector than a cat so it doesn't effect the mot on a diesel and yes it does make a difference allows the engine to rev more freely.
