Good day all
I had a conversation with a friend lately in which I was accused of being a d---head, which makes me start this question (to prove I am not :)
What is your Land rover series' average maintenance and upkeep cost per year?
Please specify what you have otherwise it won;t be useful.
Thanks in advance

I begin:
1985 series 3 santana - about 1800 CAD per year

It would depend on its age and starting condition.
I've sank about 2-3 grand in parts into mine in the last 12 months but as pretty much everything has been replaced then I'd hope I'd get away with servicing it for the next couple of years. Oh and the cost of fuel.
I'd hope it would cost around 400 -500 quid a year including insurance but it seems to be appreciating in price quicker than that

When I first bought my 109 station wagon, I spent about £1500 in the first year, I went a bit made but that did include a set of new defender wheels with Mitchelin tyres. I only do about 500 miles a year so the maintenance costs are very low, less than £100. I do buy unnecessary stuff for it though such as the fuel burning heater. All in all including fuel, insurance, mot and maintenance probably costs about £500 per year. It's a cheap toy really, I reckon my dog costs more.

Mine cost £1250 around 6 years ago and while its always in use it has also been undergoing a conversion to a camper and "rolling restoration". Big ticket itms over that period have been:
camper roof £500
chassis welding £600
wheels and tyres (6.5J) £650
engine rebuilt £500
There'a lot of other things, brakes replaced, gearbox rebuild, re-wire, but these are low on parts, a few humdred £ each but lots of my time.
I would say there's an hour of maintence per week on average with parts typically under £10 (this week out put shaft oil seal £3, hand brake shoes £10) Last week I stripped and remade the cold start system, took about 4 hours but parts cost was nothing (well 4 jubillee clips out the shed). But the insured replacement value is now £10,000 and a realistic sale price would be £8000 as there are not many tax exempt campers about.
So to answer the question as asked, about £100 in parts and 50 hours per year. I'm happy with this as the only other cost is insurence £150 and this is about matched by the (so far..) gain in value each year. My conclusion is that it costs nothing to run overall, other than my time. If I did not give up the time but paid garage rates I would say about £3000 per year but bear in mind about 50% of that labour is improvements rather than "keep it running" maintence.

Hi there,
I have owned a Series 3 1974 petrol for 2.5 years now. I have done around 2-3,000 miles per year in that time (using it on short journeys, two or three times a week). Maintenance and upkeep costs have amounted to oil and filter change (around £35 per year); transmission and axle oils (around £30 every two years); coolant (around £10 per year), and spark plugs/points (around £5 per year, i.e. I change them every two years).
One off costs have included a new clutch master cylinder (around £20) and a £160 bill for a Land Rover specialist to solve a difficult misfire and poor timing (£160, equivalent to £64 per year).
So, all in, the Series has cost me around £220 over two years, equivalent to around £88 per year.
I think my Series was restored, with lots of new parts, around 10 years ago (though it is far from concours now). I think that they did a good job of it, considering the lack of major issues that have come up. That said, the swivels are now quite pitted and I know that this a job that will need doing over the next couple of years.
As well as the fact that the Series was restored, I think that it helps that I am using the vehicle every week, rather than letting it sit around for long periods.
Hope this helps.
Cheers

06 d3 owned 6 yrs 5k spent, that incls everything tyres/oil/spare parts, but not roadtax and ins.

What part of the conversation actually made him say you were a dcikhead?

North american mentality is more aligned with leasing something new and not having to worry about maintenance or reliability or heavy cost of keeping an old truck going. I mentioned that I am looking for a Lada Niva and this conversation got started. Back in mid 80s when Lada was new in Canada they had an introductory deal. You would get 2 cars or trucks for 6000 CAD. At the time one Jeep Wrangler would cost 50% more. If you guys want to see something really neat search online for late 60s and early 70s GAZ series of SUV. I think world was a much more enjoyable place back than and that makes me a d--ead.

I have done exactly the same with mine, Galv chassis, glav bulkhead, etc. so some fairly sizeable outlay, but for the last couple of years it has probably cost me about £100 in parts to maintain because of this (couple of services and do the work myself). I have just repainted it (roller) so that was probably another £100 for paint and paraphernalia. and at some point I am going to have to do the gearbox and crank seals as the leaks are getting worse, again not expensive (coup[le of £ for the seals) but it will be a lot of effort. I would say that the financial cost of maintenance for my series is negligible, however the time and effort cost is huge!
