hi everyone, I'm new to this group so hope this is in the right area.

I'm having problems with the fob on my Freelander 2, the main issue is that it goes into the slot all the way and then nothing else happens, steering lock stays on, no instrumentation and engine won't start. After a number of tries everything comes on and off we go. A number of other spurious message appear but nothing consistant.

The most interesting happened the other day, I'd parked stopped the engine, taken the fob out got out of the car when I noticed the radio was still playing and the other doors wouldn't open. As soon as I got back in and manually turned the radio off there was the usual ejection noise from the fob area.

Any one else have this and know of a solution ?

It's sounding like the fob dock is on the way out, or the fob is damaged, causing the mechanism to stick.
Unfortunately the fob dock is quite fragile, and is overly complicated too.
Have you tried the spare? which is potentially less worn.

Thanks for the speedy reply, I was thinking the same, the spare is more reliable but still happens I'll see if I an Google anything

The fobs can wear on the little catches on the edges, but this normal results in the fob failing to dock correctly. I have one fob which is more temperamental than the other, due to wear on the catches.

However failure to release is more likely to be the dock assembly, which could well need replacing.
