P38 4.6 HSE

Morning all, hope you can help me with this weird problem.

Key fob has decided not to work, for no apparent reason. Can't start engine unless I enter the EKA code. Battery has not been flat, batteries in fob are fine.
Is showing 'keyfob battery low' on the dashboard, but it has been saying that since I bought the car 2 years ago, replacing the batteries makes no difference.
Also, since I have had this car, the led on the fob has not flashed (but the fob has been working fine), but while messing with the fob I managed to lose the battery cover, so replaced it with a spare one I had from another key, and now suddenly the LED works!

Other strange stuff it is doing - for a while the fob would unlock the drivers door only, the rest of the doors would unlock when you put the key in the ignition (without turning it) - then the fob would lock the car but not unlock it. - then it would do neither!

Occasionally it will start without the EKA code.

It all seems to be totally random at the minute!

RF receiver or the FOB itself. Diagnostics is the way forward to see if the FOB code is being received. You could try resyncing the FOB per the owners manual.

I am considering getting some diagnostic gear for it, would you say Black Box Systems is the way to go?

Based near Blackpool, situation at present, the fob appears to be working (led flashes when button pressed) But usually does not operate the central locking. Will sometimes lock it, will sometimes unlock the drivers door only, but will never do both at once!

Most of the time the car needs the EKA code to start, but will occasionally start without it.
A couple of times when the 'Engine Disabled press remote' message come on, pressing the remote several times will bring the 'Start Engine' message on, but the engine usually still won't start.

Have tried various methods of syncing the remote, nothing seems to work!

Also have a second fob with the vehicle, but this has never worked while I have owned the car - the blade is the right cut for the car, but have never been able to get the fob to work.

another quick question - The car has always had the 'Key battery low' message displayed, would this indicate a weak signal from the fob?

Hi Alan, I think the microswitches are ok, as it always accepts the EKA code.


Just been out to it now, started fine, without the code, fob working fine, unlocking, locking, everything working - HAPPY DAYS!!!! :)

Except it has now all stopped working again! :confused:

I love my Range Rover (anyone got a box of matches :p )
 
Just having a dig around in the back to see if I could fine the RF receiver, and made an interesting discovery...........
Found this..........





It doesn't look factory, I'm guesing its some sort of tracker/security device fitted by a previous owner. It consists of the metal box, a back up battery, and an arial.
What may be very pertinant is that is has an arial, and this was threaded up right next to the RF receiver arial. Could this be the source of the problem perhaps?

Sounds like you have a temperamental keyfob, or a temperamental door lock mechanism.
Either way, there's nothing sinister.
Maybe you need more time to understand the car's character.
 
Well thats the Nanocom ordered, should have it by the end of the week, hopefully that will throw some light on the situation!
