i have a 96 P38 (V8 4.6) and the distance the remote works from is very short, have to be virtually standing next to the r/rover. it seems worse to lock than unlock but there both quite poor.
the batteries are new as is the remote, brand new in march (£103)
i have heard that there is a updated remote reciever and wondered if anyone knows what the difference is between them so i can tell what one i have?
many thanks in advance.............

I too have slight problems, sometimes, like you, I have to be right next to the car fot it to work, others, just for the hell of it, I'll press the button 50 ft away & the bloody thing works !! I don't get it.

no! not flat bettery, i have replaced the battery and the battery, it starts fine turns over quickly, no problems with battery! as i said the distance the remote works from is barely 2 meter's, i have heard others say the can get maybe 25 meters away and it still works!
there is an updated receiver available to cut out spurious signals that wake up the BeCM !!
so.........is there a visual difference between the old and new recieivers?

edit...apologies!
see flat batt and didnt read it properly! it told me all i needed to know, thanks.

I have the same problem, have to stand right next to car for the remote to work, very annoying. Any details on an uprated receiver would be much appreciated, such as part number, and a good place to to source it from.

right details i found so far! the updated reciever makes no difference to the distance the remote works from, it may shorten it as its more fussy what it picks up.
i removed mine and cleaned the connection to the aerial and its now 5 times better, works up to 5meters away now, before i was lucky to get 1meter.
cant see no distinguishing features on the casing of the reciever so i dont know what one i got but i have no other problems so i guess its the newer one.

Because of the RF receiver problem, a lot of tight fisted gits as a workaround, disconnect the aerial to reduce the RF signals waking up the BECM. Even though there is an official fix for this by replacing the RF receiver with part number YWY500170 (3rd revision of RF receiver).

Also, although the P38 Rangie would of been at least a £50K car, it would seem it only has about £5's worth of cabling in it! You make need to check the cables to see if they aren't corroded or shorting somewhere.

My P38 has the new RF receiver and cables are fine as well as the aerial and I can blip it way across the car park....certainly far further than a measly 5 meters.
