Just wondering what the average life of a key fob battery is i'm on my second set in 5 weeks! is this right?

How long do your batteries last for ?

I changed mine when I got the motor in Sept last year and they are still OK
Duff batteries maybe ?, expiry date ok ?
You really must stop buying accessories for your rangie in the pound shop ! :D

Well I got a full box of them - brand new and a decent brand (Energizer)- got loads of date 2013.
Just wondering why the message keeps popping up every month or so...I don't use them a lot maybe 2- 3 times a day, but not everyday!
maybe something to do with diconnecting the battery??

any ideas?

Daft question time - you are putting in 2 batteries, aren't you ? ( just checking !)
Are you getting a "remote batteries low" message on the dash ?
Have you resynchronised the remote after changing batteries ?

YES
YES
YES- otherwise I think I would be able to drive it!

Sorry - had to ask ! ;)
Bad/dirty contact in battery holder ?
Button sticking on ? (unlikely I know)
Maybe worth buying 2 new batteries just in case you have a bad batch ?

Usually last at least 12 months depending on use. Get high quality CR 2032 (I think) and give them a try. I use Panasonic.

I am getting a little worried now- just replaced the batteries yet again( 3 weeks) after message appeared on dash. Still coming up with key battery low????? don't understand it- put in fresh set "energizer" cr 2025, made sure they are the right way up- cleaned contacts on the key fob- screwed the back on down tight, nice bright red light showing and locikng and unlocking from a good distance.
Any ideas??

Silly question but are just getting a battery low warning on the dash or are the batteries indeed low i.e you need to stand really close to get the doors to un-lock?

with mine i changed both sets in june and sometimes i need to be up close othertimes they will fire the doors from inside the house - all dependent on "the prevailing wind"

warning is on the dash...every 3-5 weeks, I just find it very strange...

Are the buttons on the key fob still ok if they are worn it is possible that they are staying down in your pocket therefore running the button down quicker! You can get replacement button kits for these on e-bay: Find Range Rover GENUINE LAND ROVER P38 Remote Button Pad. on eBay within, Range Rover, Car Parts, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 20-Nov-07 11:59:11 GMT)

Thanks for the suggestions..

surely if the buttons are being pressed down the light would come on on the fob? ( they are not in my pocket all the time- just on my desk..)
the fob looks in good condition, not much wear on them at all.
the one thing i did note was that there is no rubber sealing ring on the battery compartment- but i guess thats for when you drop them in a puddle. I cant see how that would make a difference..

OK I bought a fresh set of batteries last week and today I get a " Low Key Battery " msg on the dash...something aint right here...I really don't understand it- has anyone heard of this problem elsewhere?
Could it be that the fob is on its way out?
Distance locking and unlocking seem fine- 10meters or so.

Use my keyfob daily and the batteries last ages. I change them every 18 months as a matter of course and have never had the low battery display. The spare fob has had the batteries in over two years, admittedly it is hardly used but it still works fine. I always use Panasonic.
Is the button membrane o.k.-could it be tripping the buttons?-cheap enough to replace

Could be an internal fob problem but the fob is only powered up when the buttons (Switches) are depressed-indicated by the red light. Any fault message is annoying but if the fob is doing it's job you could live with it. Never heard of a repair to them and a new fob will set you back over £100 +VAT

I could live with just the message appearing but the batteries are not exactly cheap to replace every 2-4 weeks.:(

I honestly dont think that the Main Stealers have either the equipment or the expertise to diagnose or repair the keyfob. They will take the usual course of selling a new fob for over £100. Do you have the other fobs that came with the car?-if so, why not use one of those as the "Default" key and keep the one that's gobbling the batteries as an emergency key. The choice is yours! I am also sure that there is not a "Spurious" supplier of the units. Also avoid buying fobs from Egay-they will not work and cannot be programmed by the dealers despite how tempting the selling tack may be.
If anyone on the forum knows different, I would be more than happy to be proven wrong!!!!

i got a brand new fob in march this year, the old one packed up and then some idiot broke it by throwing it (shh) anyway the batteries have been in it since then and are still fine, no warnings on dash so far.
does the warning come on as soon as you enter the vehicle or when key put into ignition?
there's a coil on the barrel to talk to the fob and send signal to BeCM, it may be this is reading a lower signal strength than there realy is, knackered in other words!

The exciter coil around the ignition switch prompts the fob to send it's unique code to the alarm ecu then then the BECM, if the code matches the value stored, the BECM then enables the engine ECU to allow the engine to start.
In other words-when the key is pushed into the switch-not when you get into the car.
