Hi all we havent long had our 300tdi on a 99 T plate and really do enjoy it but I am not sure on the pros or cons of swapping it for a TD5 if at all any. Any thoughts on this would be much appreciated.

Thanks Ben

I would keep the TDi 300 until you can fine a 2002 or later TD5. The TDi 300's are marvelous machines and if modified with a few simple and cheap mods can deliver 33+mpg which I'm now finding is not easy to achieve with a TD5 auto - they are VERY nice and comfy though !!

Popular and effective Modifications:

1. De-EGR - cost about £20 plus 1hr of your time;

2. De-Catt t costs £21.25+vat plus about 1 hr.

thanks for the comments people so far looks like keeping the 300 would be best
Why are you thinking of changing it? Only you know what's best for you, but if you are having problems with the 300TDI then people on here can advise about fixing them or telling you if a TD5 will be any better than the 300TDI with respect to what ever your problem is

I have both at the moment, only because I bought the 300tdi auto last year and it has been magnificent, even towing a huge twin axle Lunar caravan it has been returning 25 mpg, but that said they are a bit noisey compared to the TD5. I have taken the EGR off and the 300 really does fly. The TD5 does seem more refined and the 5 cylinder engine smoother and quieter, but it does not steam off the line as quick as the 300 but I have yet to lose the EGR. The seats in the TD5 I am informed by passengers are not as comfy as the 300 although as the driver I dispute that. The air suspension certainly makes a difference with ride quality but can also be a cause of problems due to holes in the suspension air bags or compressor woes. I still like the TD5 but am so pleased I have the 300 to fall back on especially as the auto box has now started playing up on the TD5 which pointed out something else which I find annoying, they do not fit a dipstick to the automatic box on the early TD5's (2001) I don't know about later ones, so it's either into the garage to get it checked or up on the ramps and diy. Oh and by the way, they all suffer from water leaks from the sunroofs.

Well imo the dipstick "system" on the 300 is USELESS !!! its SO inaccurate, it says check it in N on the dip stick, but P in Rave, who knows which is correct and it climbs up the dipstick so quick even after a little idling as the fluid heats up, so your forever waiting for it to cool......ridiculously stupid idea........TD5 is simple!! fill to overflow...Job done.

I bought my 300 from a guy who had replaced it with a TD5 - reckons it was the worst mistake he made!

He had the usual electrical problems with it, but the water leaks were starting to wear on him - like a wet groin when you went round a corner! It had been back to landy several times, and in the end he sealed up the sunroofs. Shame on quite a new truck.

He did state, that had he been willing to loose thousands, he would have sold it and kept the 300!

This makes me want to really think. I have a 00 II with a V-8 so I bought a TD5 to swap. May be I should have gotten a 300. It is not to late. The question is does the 300 fit easily and to what.

If the person from NZ has problems over here in Kentucky it is like being on the Moon. Any help what be super nice.
