Hi, I just don"t know what to do with my 2003 Serengeti TD4 Automatic 5 door in Black. MOT end April 2020. 148K with a brilliant Oil/Water tight engine, good tyres all around on near perfect Alloys, BUT, will shortly require a new Reverse Brake Band. Could I sell it as a runner, or should I try to get the Auto box done on the cheap. If I P/X it for another car should I tell the garage about the Auto box which works perfectly 99% of the time. The only time It shuddered slightly was in the same place on a slight down ward slope where I had to reverse back up for 15 feet. Getting in and out of my driveway has never been a problem nor has parking in any car park.
The last thing I want to do is to sell it under false pretences because I wouldn"t like it if someone did it to me. So if I keep it and once the box is out is replacing the Reverse Brake Band an easy job?

Other opinions may vary, but I would always declare a fault if selling privately. For a garage as a px I would expect them to be able to work out the faults and would class it as sold as seen. The px price well allows for any repairs.

The band is not an easy fix I am afraid. Buried in the gearbox depths, special tools etc to get in. If you decide to fix, get an exchange box.
 
I agree with Andy, if selling privately be honest, which is probably why my TD4 with a faulty gearbox failed to sell. If it's going to be traded in, then it's up the the person accepting the trade in to check it out.
 
My D1 V8 was an old dog - even when it wasn't 'that' old. Soon after I got it, it became obvious it had some pretty major issues - and more major issues seemed to develop as clockwork as the seasons.

The last straw was when the engine lost compression.

I sold it being completely open about its faults, so it went cheap obviously... to a small time trader who simply took it away and parked it up on the side of a busy road with a for sale sign in it for a couple of K more than I sold it to him for! I'm sure he didn't tell who ever bought it about its problems.

I dunno how much the bits are to repair your box and the labour to to do it - sounds like a specialist job if you want it done quick & reliably. I know its a bit of a gamble, but maybe a box from a breakers might be an alternative.
