i'd actively encourage anyone to avoid the 2002-2006 L322 regardless of engine/gearbox, rot is another problem swallowing them up...

2006+ l322, now thats a different story.. :D Hmm :cool:
 
Besides, they are not all bad, just buy a decent diagnostic tool so you can clear the codes each week and you'll be fine :D
For a 15 year old car my 2005 hasn't been too bad. If you can do your own spannering and accept that parts are a bit more expensive you can have a luxury motor for very little money. And considering how many there are out there if they were that bad the RR section would be getting posts every 2 minutes.
 
Buying any 2nd hand car brings risks. A 16yr old 2nd hand car, bigger risks. A 16yr old which was expensive to begin with , was made by Land Rover,massive risk. Not forgetting the majority of replacement parts makers think that the vehicle is still worth £80k plus, and price parts accordingly.
In summary, 16yr old , 2nd hand veh, made by a marque known for unreliability, the parts to which can still be extortionate ( wing mirror replacement glass £300+), is it a risk? Yes
Do those of us who own them, love them? Yes
Do we accept they cost money to maintain? Yes. Some reluctantly, but Yes
Do people buy one and tell us 4 weeks in how great it is. Only to get bitten in the bum the next week? Yes
Are you willing to take the risk, and keep a couple of grand aside in case you're approaching a 2nd gearbox, and other sundries? Only you know that.
I've had mine ten year now. I've gone through some expensive, and difficult, times, with her. Would I swap her for any other marque No.
 
I bought a 2003 td6 to use as a daily car to do a 50 mile round trip every weekday. When it works it’s more than capable of doing it in great comfort and effortlessness.
However if you rely on anyone else to do the mechanicals you’ll be running out of money very quickly.

when I bought mine I made sure that for the cost of buying it and if it needs a new gearbox in my ownership I’d still be a couple of grand under a tdv8.

A tdv8 is the only option for a reliable diesel l322.
I went for a td6 so I had a nice comfortable refined car that I can use around the farm and not worry about scratching or using a £7000 tdv8.
 
I had a new gearbox put in my P38 but I had extra Insurance for parts, and it was done by Land Rover stealers, I don't have a clue how much it all was but you know.... got a set of tyres out of them too, not bad for 1 year of subbing to the Insurance, went off-road in a gravel pit, and the sediment ground down the gears
