Hi all,

I have the opportunity to buy a 2004 Range Rover TD6. I live on a farm and need a decent 4WD to get up and down some pretty 'green' lanes!

  • 188k
  • FSH (apparently genuine and from a LR dealer)
  • Just had full service including all fluids changed

Looks beautiful...!

However, some of the reviews I have been reading send shivers down my spine regarding gearboxes packing in and other VERY expensive potential issues. My question is am I about to invest £2700 in a major liability? Or is it just a gamble?

Thanks in advance!

Tony

is there any gearbox work repair/replacement in the history? 188k sounds quite high for the original unit
have you done a testdrive and checked EVERYTHING works?
if its main dealer serviced, they probably havent done a gearbox oil change

There are no warning lights, smooth gear changes, everything works as it should at the moment anyways! I guess as it stands its a lovely machine, just looking for some reassurance I guess that they are not inherently bad apples?

The car isn't but the gearbox is, if I was buying one I'd need to know that the gearbox has been done properly. Unfortunately with these there isnt a good one that doesn't fail

Factor in the cost of replacement gearbox for worst case, add on to the price and decide wether it’s still worth it to you. That way you won’t be disappointed. There are lots of l322s about at the moment take your time.

Check the MOT history, it may flag up any fluid leaks before an occurrence of doom ...

And it's nice to be nosey sometimes ...

High five....

Either way, I have just been advised by a friend (mechanic) to avoid the 2004 TD6 at all costs....I trust him and he's never let me down. Pity, maybe it I'll get a Discovery after all.
