Cheers, I checked the filter... I had 2 rubber gaskets in there which I always suspected, I think I will need to bleed the lot but the battery is flat now so it will be a task for another day.
Not sure why air built up all of a sudden, its been many runs (3-4 hours) without any issues other than the one up a hill ? I have done the fuel pump timing recently I will have to check everything is tight but I am sure it is. Maybe it was just the second rubber gasket.

And takey our time when bleeding. I would usually take half an hour for air to rise in the filter, tapping it occasionally to encourage air bubbles to rise. I have a bucket underneath the vehicle, and would usually runa t least a litre of fuel through to make sure no air. Be sure the lift pump isn't on the cam before you start!

Ta.. its a britpart filter so I suspect they are the same ;).. When you say 2 ruber washers, you mean the ones on the bolt going through it ? Actually also managed to snap the white tab off the bottom when I did it last.. Its never been changed in 12 years so was all ceased to hell. I assume if its on the cam it just doesn't pump ? Seems a lot more finicky than my 200TDI filter ::)

Right, chuck it away, and get a proper Delphi one, as you will see on mine.
One small washer on the bolt, one on the centre underneath the filter head, about 3/4 inch across.Use a sharp point or tweezers to get it out.
White bleed thingies are available from Delphi.

Dunno what you mean about finicky, I can do it with my eyes shut! :D

Still the same, not bleeding starting, it did sort of start but then same sound.

Where next.. I loosened one of the Injection pump pipes (on the pump itself) and nothing came out when I was manually priming it. But I doubt the manual prime would go past the Injection pump ?

Cracked the main fuel into the cylinder, and fuel comes out of there when cranking it over. Removed Air filter to be sure no host issues.

To be fully clear this was running fine... then started roaming up and down then stopped.

There are two bleed screws on the injector pump body, loosen them, and pump with the lift pump until clear fuel(no air bubbles), runs out. You should see clear fuel at every stage of the procedure, if there are air bubbles coming out when you bleed low pressure, it just wont start!
When you are sure low pressure side is good, loosen a couple of injector unions, and get an assistant to turn engine over on the key. Fuel should drip form injector unions, tighten them, and it should start!

So next question is what caused it ?
Could it have been air in there all along ? surely once started air gets forced through ? Could it have been my original filter with 2 seals ?

Wouldn't go quite that far, but I do know CAV stuff, I have been working on it since a child! ;)
The air probably got left in there after the filter change, it is important to take your time with the bleeding, and some low pressure systems bleed easier than others.
Sometimes the system can actually suck in air, if there is a leak in the pipe between tank and filter, or a faulty lift pump can put air into the system. Any of this should become obvious over the next few days.
These almost never self bleed, any air will stop it dead. :(

Just a thought, Diesel PEED out of one of the bleed screws on the pump, the one facing the Front Bulkhead, the front one it just dribbled out... worth giving that one a go again ?

No! Doesn't matter how much fuel so long as no air bubbles coming out. If it runs, leave well alone! :)

Man alive, same again, Literally only just refilled the same water tank for the first time since the last effort.
So I can fix it easily enough but where could the air in the system be coming from ? #2 injector looked like it had a little fuel around it but everything was tight.
