Hello everyone, just started to do some research around getting a Land Rover, we are off to live in Australia in about 18 months as I'm thinking a Land Rover will be a good car to take hence the research....I have to own the car for a year before entering the UK, I going to start looking at models starting from 2000.

I'm sure I'll have a million questions but for now it just hello

welcome matey, what type of landy are you looking for??

Hi gemsdad, thanks for the welcome. I knew next to nothing about Land Rovers a couple of days ago, yet worrying the more I read the more I like despite the horror stories about reliability.

I want something for Oz thats going to last 4-5 years, be able to throw kids and dog in (maybe the wife too) and trundle off to the mountains, beach, bush - canoe\ surfboard on roof, tent in the boot with the dog.

At the moment I'm thinking either a 06\07 Disco or a 04/05 Range Rover for around 15K, I love the looks of the Range Rover and all the gadgets but I guess its more to go wrong, the Disco might be more practical though but I've never driven or even sat in either.

I've also got to consider resale value in Oz, used cars in general over there are more expensive, for a 04/05 Range Rover your looking at upto $40000 (£26K), and a 06/07 Disco upto $30000 (£20K) so although the cars are similar in price here, the resale value of the Range Rover is quite a lot more in Oz.

I dont have to purchase one until Sep this year so I have plenty of time for research, think the next step is to go and test drive both, any advice would be great.

thanks
Rob

There's a saying in Australia, "If you want to head into the bush, buy a Land Rover. If you want to make it back, buy a Toyota."

That's a very critical comment West Slope Rover, unfortunately it's probably true much as I hate to admit it. I certainly wouldn't venture into the outback with my p38 after the problems I've had recently.

Idon't know, there's something about them that I just love, it's like a drug. Japmobiles are too boring.

Thor, defender's look class, like a big Tonka toy and I'm sure resale value is better I just can't imagine the wife buying into them, it's hard enough to convince her we need any kind of 4x4, if I tell her I want a big boys toy like a defender.....well I'd probably have to live in it!

Then go on auto trader or ebay in Australia and have a look at what they are selling for then. Show here the finical gain....... buy her a aussie car for getting around then

Hi Thor, had a look on carsales Australia and the potential profit looks very similar to a Range Rover, a £15k car here is around $35-40k in Oz. I would love one, a 3dr hardtop in black especially she just wouldn't buy it :(
