yesterday i upgraded from a disco 1 300tdi to a disco 2 TD5,iv never driven cars with a throttle potentiometer more than a few meter's in the garage,just wondering is there suposed to be that slight delay of power after acceleration? or is this a characteristic of the injector loom fault?

also im thinking of getting a bit more power from the td5 i was going to go with just a decat pipe with stainless mid section and a K&N filter,with this increase torque by much or would there be much of a noticable difference?

thanks
derek

the delay is typical td5 so dont worry. they need to be driven on the turbo everywhere unless they are chipped, the best is j.e. engineering in coventry. do go to big with the power increase if you have a migh milage engine. also the early td5 before the euro4 emission are alot better they are the 10p engine i think.

thanks :)

i chipped my fathers td5 defender and it made a huge difference,much more power and more drivable he say's,cant remember the name of the box,HPI i think

I drove a mates chipped TD5, and to be honest i didn't feel any difference at all. To be fair, he bought it that way, and didn't know if it was set up for towing or power etc. I,m not that clued up on the chipping thing, but i like mine the way it is. I did have oil in the injector harness. Renewed it. Cleaned oil out the loom for a few weeks with electrical spray, and its bone dry now. Didn't solve the power lag thing, so its another LR accessory I'm afraid. You'll get used to it. It would be good to hear your views on Td5 compared to your old one after running it for a wee while.

my brother has my 300 and we took them down the motorway,the td5 is slightly better acceleration and nice torque delivery but 4gear on there matched. td5 is very girly to drive,everything is so light and relaxed,but then again im just using this for daily use,the 300 was better off road in my opinion,the lack of diff lock in the td5 is a pain,i got stuck on a rutted grass section(road tyres) and with the TC you cant power out of a hard section, but god damn the disco2 is one sexy machine and unbelievably comfortable

Hello Derek and welcome to the wonderful world of D2 ownership. I've had 4 D2's now so as you can guess I'm a bit of a fan !!

You don't say what year your D2 is, or whether it is manual or auto?

Here are a few thoughts to get the best from your new car:

1. First mod to any LR diesel engine is a De-EGR and inlet manfold clean. Kits from Paddocks costs about £22+vat.

2. Clean the MAP (manifold absolute pressure) sensor on the inlet manifold;

3. For 2001 cars, do a de-cat. Cost me about £62 from MM4x4 for a ss downpipe - big benefits:

4. Full service, all oils, all filters, coolant, etc;

5. This engine rresponds to revs more than previous diesel units so don't be afraid to give it a bit of welly. There really should be no lag at all.

6. Buy yourself a Nanocom or HawkEye diagnostic tool - it'll save you £00's and heartache.

7. A faulty/non-work MAF (airflow meter) will be a big difference to responsiveness.

8. Offroad the Traction Control is brilliantly effective but you may need to learn how to get the best from it.

Enjoy your new motor

Dave

thanks for that dave,its a manual 2000 model ,im getting used to the traction control,its great for launching at the traffic lights:D,ill give the map sensor a blast of cleaner tomorow so it should be good,might run the inlet mani cleaner through it to see if it makes a difference

I'm running around in a '99 TD5 auto at the mo and there is definitely no lag on take-off. She is de-EGR'd, K&N filter and fully synth transmission oils to reduce drivetrain friction.

I agree with all above. Regularly clean the MAP sensor with electrical contact cleaner although blanking the EGR will negate the need to do this. De-cat the exhaust (and remove centre silencer!!!). Also keep MAF and airbox sensor clean.

On the TD5 autos I've worked on/owned, the replacement of the centre silencer has not been a success due to the increased noise. On a manual 'box car the revs go up and down as you change gear so the pitch changes and it is not unpleasant. On an auto using normal accelleration the revs stay much more constant until TC lockup at about 52mph - so it drones.

I haven't noticed any increase in performance either. The De-catt downpipe on post 2001 cars is very successful however.

I agree Biglad, removing the centre silencer doesn't directly aid in performance, it's a personal preference and I wouldn't want to mislead.
My TD5 is a manual and therefore I dont experiance the 'drone' you suggest. The cabin noise has increased but only marginally.
