X member looked fine until on ramp and further inspection, new one required

Bulkhead outrigger didnt just have a small hole, had a large problem on top, needs replacing

Clutch on its way out new required

Gutted :(

Parts look like £300 ish

Labor up to 1600-1700

I think Im going to have to learn how to tackle these myself up to the point of welding, and see if I can get my head around the clutch replacement. :mad:
 
Weldings not to difficult. 90% of it is preparation. Don't be afraid to spend £300 on a decent MIG welder and get going, find some scrap to practise on and you'll soon be away - plenty of tutorial vids on youtube - but I'll happily explain the basics if you'd like? :)
You'll have to be pretty savvy with a grinder as well, although again, with a bit of practise its not hard to pick up. :p
 
Just don't cut straight through the cables that run inside the chassis for the rear lights like my brother did. D'oh
 
Thanks for the encouragement, to be honest I would sooner gain a skill and spend the time than pay someone else for their time, I can find the time :)

Im going to give it a week or two and then start compiling a list of parts, skills and plans

I can recommend Norton cutting discs. Don't forget goggles. Not just for flying discs parts but against falling ancient silt from godknowswhere.

Patience is a virtue.
 
If you can its always better to cut the rotten metal totally out rather than plate it, if you just plate it you are making a rust trap for the future.
When I did my rear cross member I used the 4 1/2 inch 1mm thin discs, cut real fast.
 
Best thing with machine mart is to buy stuff and then when they ask for your postcode tell them its a cash sale, rally gets the maidstone guys revved up probably because its not in their manual, almost makes it worth going in there, tbh better deals to be had elsewhere.

Go for it mate! As I said before - I'll happily give you welding tips etc. You'll be surprised at what you'll learn in just an hours worth of messing about with it. :)

Thanks, Ill be asking for advice as soon as I get myself sorted and all the required parts. I persuaded myself today that welding is just a fancy way to glue things which made it a little less daunting :)

Haha it was the noise it made and the apparent violence in which it sticks the metal together that put me off when I was younger and watching my dad fix his landy. But once you've got your eye fixed on the pool of molten metal it becomes quite mesmerising, and tbh I love it now. :p I stick metal together just for fun!
TIG welding is probably my favourite though, but that's a whole different kettle of fish.
 
Here it is prior to a visit to the MOT, its a shame my mechanical know how or lack of didnt pick up on these major issues

Looks great! I want to say it looks like its rough, in the sense that the paint has a texture to it, not that it's a bad job! Is it? Or am I seeing things? As I can see getting it clean being a right pain if it is! :p:p

Yeah its rough to touch

Everyone has mentioned the same regarding dirt but it jetwashes no problem, and unlike gloss it stays looking clean in general - the pic shown is after around 5 weeks of sitting in various weathers whereas I know a gloss black would be looking dusty after a day or two.

I did accidently headbutt the car one day and graze my head when changing a wheel so thats a downside :D
