ive just done all 4 wheel bearings and it still sounds noisy on the rear diff they where cheap wheel bearing kits about £15 each but the front seem to be fine i also did the diff oil on both diffs the rear was a burn creamy brown colour but no chunks or anything and i was told both diffs take 1.7ltr of oil but the front took more oil than the rear and yes it was on level ground back on the wheel bearing they litterally sound like they are ****ed wining or wurring like fcuk

do cheap wheel bearing make much differant to the more expensive ones im probably going to do them again but does any body have a better suggestion

tried what with the prop ? sorry might be being a bit thick but it is late after all. mate if you get a chance could you have a look at my post about my newly acquired oil leak as well, as much as i like an oily landrover it has to go haha

o right i see if i did that what would i be looking for ? im sure the noise is coming from rear wheels but could be the other poins like you said if i take the prop off and the noise go's away what does that mean ? and if i remove it and the noise stays ?

if you remove the rear prop and the noise stays then its the front you need to look at and if it goes its the rear you need to look into a little more.

if its the pinion bearing it is diy-able at home if its the carrier bearings then it is a little more involved and probably easier to pick up a known good second hand diff as they are cheap enough over there in the UK, unless you know what you are doing and have the kit the diffs can be a bugger to set up correctly if you are doing things like carrier bearings.

You havent over or under tightened the wheel bearings have you? just a final thought like:)

i wouldn't know if i have over tightened because i wasn't aware there was a torque setting for those nuts ????? if there is what is it ? also i dont have a socket big enough for the torque wrench so is there a known way to do it ?

I take it you are either using a spanner or punching the nut around then?.
Your better off using a socket but anyway,If your sure the outer race is seated properly all you do is tighten the hub nut whilst turning the hub until you start feeling some resistance then back it of an 1/8th of a turn or one flat then fit the lock tab etc. There isn't a torque setting.

if i take rear prop off how will that make it easier to see which diff is making the noise because all the internal gears will still be turning with the prop on or off ??????????
