silly ? but have you changed the thermostat? is the heater getting remotely worm? might be stuck shut

On my last one a 2.0DL the heater didn't warm up for ages - I sold it before fixing it (10 years!!!) but was told thermostats mostly fail in the open position thereby not allowing full temp quickly and so heater being slow to warm.

i havnt changed the thermostat, if i go for a long drive and then stay stationary for 5 - 10 mins the heat will build up but then as i drive away cold air is back....its like it takes ages to build up and last for seconds.
I have just in the last half hour removed the top hose going into or more specifically coming out of the heater matrix and turn engine on to see if coolant is flowing, it is coming out of the matrix, but it wasnt gushing out, its that normal?

ive heard replacing thermastat on td4 is big bucks?

if you take the thermostat out put it in a pan of water and boil it as the water gets hot the stat should open then cool the water down and it should close, if this dosent happen then the stat is fu**ed hope this helps failing that flush the cooling system the matrix may be blocked or remove pipe that goes into matrix put a hose pipe on matrix and flush it through it should run clear out of the coolant pip;)

after much research im beginning to think its the thermostat, although i will fluh the matrix first and see if that does it.

the haynes says you gotta take off alot of thing to change the stat, but ive read guides saying you dont.

not sure how to remove it but shouldnt be that hard manuals go around the world to tell u how to do a job lol if im doing anything i find look through the manual then just go for it if you get stuck refer back to the manual;)

Well compared to other cars removing the stat on the TD4 is a bit more involved. Never done it myself but looked into it last winter when I thought mine was playing up and its not a small job.

Changing the thermostat is a bit of a bugger, water pump has to come out!
Done it a few times now... So have come up with a few possible short cuts if you decide to do it!

Chris.
