Not saying you are wrong - I'm just struggling to see how a bump or tow start would snap a cambelt unless it was severely on it's last legs.
It was the 'tow the car for a minute or so' post that had me scratching me head - if 'Bump starts are death to Catalytic converters' then this method is the proverbial noose around the despots neck - the amount of unburnt fuel that will be nicely mingling around the cat after a minute or so of towing should be enough to bugger the cat and probably shoot the back box half a mile down the road as well!!!

LOL!!! Checked and despite a little bit of lying water under the fusebox, there's nowt corroded and doesn't look like the scene of the crime...
...any more suggestions, it's not the battery, alternator, highly doubt the starter as I've given it a big ol bashing with no effect and I've checked for corroded connections everywhere and there's nothing apparent.
Interestingly, tonight it started again (out the blue) and I drove it for 30 mins, restarting it several times fine at the top of hills. Then, when I parked in in the drive (I reverse up a slight kerb/bump) it wouldn't start again!
I'm now thinking that the bump I reverse it up when parking it dislodging a connection or something??? - it only seems to stop working when I get home!??? ...or am I grasping at straws?... taking it to a local electrical garage at the weekend to get it checked out but would welcome any 'stabs in the dark' meantime!

Its your negative connector on the starter (black wire). They are a standard electrical push fit connector prone to loosening especially if they have been disconnected. Just use a small flat edge screw driver to compress the aperture of the terminal.
Happens when over rough terrain, excessive engine movements etc.

This was my gremlin after all! Pity I didn't read this post before I joined the RAC and got the nice man out to show me precisely this! - he hopped up over the engine, reached done, pulled out a wee spade like cable/connector, gave it a wee rub with emory cloth, lubed it up, stuck it back in and I'm back happy motoring once again!

I've had the exact same problem with my freelander for ages now and it was really getting to me. Thank god I read this forum.
Cheers for the advice/diagnosis ,probably stopped me getting rid of my car! That's how much it was getting to me!

It happened after the ....well.....the hgf
and a couple of other things.Still love it when it works though ,I was beginning to think it was an immobiliser fault of something.
